Question about Probiotics I'm pretty sure Bubbles might be experiencing irritable bowel syndrome. She gets loose stools for a day or so about every 6 weeks. The vet has prescribed Flagyl for her before and that clears it up, but it comes back. The last time she saw the vet, about 5 weeks ago, he didn't find anything seriously wrong and just gave her another Rx for Flagyl. I'm wondering if I should try probiotics. My question is, is it necessary for her to take the pill with a meal...or anytime during the day? I purchased a bottle of GNC Probiotic pills at Petsmart tonight, but it doesn't answer this question on the label. Does anyone know? Thanks! |
My Roxie is being treated for reflux causing her to regurgitate her food. She got diahrrea from the medicine and the vet put her on a probiotic. She is also on Flagyl. The vet said not to give her the probiotic anytime near the Flagyl. She said the Flagyl will eat up all the good bacteria from the probiotic. She said I could give it to her anytime just not near the Flagyl. Can I ask how much Petsmart is charging. I got the probiotics from the vet and it was 25.00 for 30 pills. Thanks |
Ibs As an IBS sufferer ( violins pleez! ) I know that for humans the probiotic has to be taken prior to meals, for me before my main meal - dinner. It should not do your baby any harm so worth a shot if the vet agrees. Flagyl is not a nice drug for her to be on? What was it prescribed for? So sorry for your little one, hope she can be definitively diagnosed and healed soon. IBS is a hard disease to diagnose and treat for humans however. |
Ibs I defer to Patti re the flagyl/probiotic. I did not know that when I wrote what I just posted. |
Thanks, Patti. The GNC probiotic pills were $17.24 for a bottle of 90 tablets. They were on sale, the regular price was about $22-23. BTW, it's been about 5 weeks since Bubbles' last Flagyl Rx. I wonder if that's long enough. |

This is a nice probiotic/enzyme products designed for dogs by an animal nutritionist (believe a PhD, if I'm remembering right): Nature's Farmacy - Store - Product Details |
Ibs I'm so sorry your baby is having problems. I've been using probiotics for years. I am no expert, by any means, but I do believe not all probiotics are equal. With dogs having a shorter digestive track, some "people" products are not as effective. Some won't survive until they get were they are needed? Also, different brands have different amounts and possibly different strains of bacteria. I have had good luck w/Wholistic Digest-all plus. You only need a 1/4 tsp per cup of food, given with every meal. Website: www.wholisticpetorganics.com Sorry I can't be more detailed. I used to be able to recite this stuff easily as I have several allergy dogs. Apparently, my memory has a slow leak. Good Luck |
