Ear Infection :( Good morning everyone. Princess Sophie slept for 7 hours again last night and we are very happy about that. We are still giving her the oral medication for the bladder infection we believe she has. This morning however, after getting up to potty, she would not lay back down to sleep, which she usually will for about one hour. She was whimpering and scratching at her left ear. I took a look and compared the two and sure enough the left ear was pinker than the right. Right away I knew we were going to the vet!! Just got back with a second medication to be put into her left ear as she has been diagnosed with a yeast infection of the ear. This should be fun. NOT! Poor girl, she's napping now but that ear is going to be a problem for a couple more days. We'll be keeping a very close eye on her, as if we don't already, just to make sure she isn't getting worse. I would appreciate anyone's help to know what to watch out for, besides shaking her head and scratching at her ear, that would be helpful to us at this time. Ya'll are so good with information and I know you will steer me right!! Thanks so much!! |
Oh, poor baby! Teeka had a yeast ear infection a few months ago. You will need to keep ears clean and dry. A good cleaning daily is best. I wonder if the antibiotic she is on for her bladder infection caused the yeast infection! Give Sophie a big hug as she probably needs one! |
I wondered that too Deb. Diane...I just got done treating Rosie for a yeast infection in one ear and a bacterial infection in the other. Rosie had brown gunk in her ear and scratched it like crazy. The vet told me some dogs have yeasty ears...so to watch her. She said it could be caused by allergies or not keeping her ears dry also. I check her ears every day now. |
Best wishes for Princess Sophie to recover quickly. Poor baby! I agree with Deb's advice to check and clean daily. We have not had any ear problems yet, but comb the ear hair daily with a flea comb to remove any wax and prevent buildup. I use a cleaner with a drying agent about once a week, especially after baths. |
Diane, does Sophie have stand up ears or floppy? If they are floppy, the inside of the ear is not getting enough air circulating to keep it dry |
Thanks Deb and Bobbi, I really appreciate this info. I thought to ask about the one antibiotic causing the ear problem but then I completely forgot to ask about it. I hate when I do that!!!:( She is only supposed to be on the meds for the bladder infection until her next regularly scheduled vet visit the first week in April. They want to check urine at that time to determine if that infection is gone. I am hoping for the best! I will be checking her ears everyday now and being sure to clean them regularly (each bath time). I wondered if all the hair she had in her ears till her trim earlier this week could have caused it as I thought she had a LOT of hair in her ears. Something else I will need to keep a close watch on!! I have figured out how to give her bladder meds by myself so I guess I'll figure giving the ear meds as well. What fun!!! I just feel so very sorry for her. She's resting comfortably right now, napping, so I'm hoping when she's awake it won't be too painful for her. She has stand up ears!! Thanks again for the info. Greatly appreciated!!!:) |
Well she woke up, after napping only a few minutes, shook her head and cried. I have pulled out of her pen and now she's trying to nap next to me. Please pray for us so she's not in pain and healed very soon! Thanks again! |
Check with your vet about daily cleaning. Mine have some ear meds that state no cleaning during the treatment time, only wipe off any excess medication till done. |
prayers for healing for princess sophie...... |
Poor Sophie! :( |
My meds also said no cleaning. Also...I have been plucking Rosie's ear hair since her infections. They are not near as bad as the poodle I had growing up by they are hairier then Ruby's. |
aaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww poor baby, praying for both of you |

Sophie Poor baby, ear issues do hurt! Glad you were able to take her to the vet and get her ears treated. My boy also had the yeast infection in the ear and showed mild symptoms similar to those you mention, but what really bothered me was his lack of appetite. I thought he had a gastric problem. However the vet diagnosed him with yeast ears, cleaned them out and used a medication to clear up the yeast. It seems the ear issues/goop build up were making him nauseous as well as itchy! As soon as he came home from the vet he ate again, like instant magic!!! After the initial course of treatment was over, I kept him on the Zymox (Otic HCl 1.0 %) ear drops every week (and now only once every 2 weeks) to keep him clear of both bacterial and yeast infections. He does not mind the drops. That has worked well for months and he has no ear problems now. Always something!!! By the way, so happy his urinary treatment is working and that she is sleeping better at night. |
Sophie Sorry Sophie, last paragraph, ...."HER urinary...." My mistake! |
