Neuter questions. My dog is 1 1/2 human years and is 8 pounds. He is scheduled to get neutered next Friday and I'm wondering how much weight he will gain if he gets neutered at almost 2 years old. What is the recovery period for him his age and is there any precautions we need to do when we take him home afterward? And btw we are doing the laser surgery because it says its less painful for the dog and less of a chance of infection. Thank you to all. |
If your dog stays active, the weight gain will be minimal. I don't have any experience with laser neutering, so I'm not sure if the same precautions would be applied -- other than the pre-op blood tests. With traditional neutering, vets generally advise restricting activity (no running or jumping) for the first 48 hours, and reducing activity for up to 2 weeks. No bathing during that time frame. Ask your vet for discharge instructions. I think laser would require fewer restrictions. Also, after anesthesia, you may want to feed a smaller dinner. My boy always wants his full meal and does fine with it, but some dogs do better with a lighter meal. Best wishes to your boy for a safe procedure and speedy recovery. |
Thank you for the info. I'll reduce his food intake and Will restrict him to run up the stairs and jump to the bed. I'll ask additional question to the doc. Thank you again |
Why does neutering cause weight gain? |
