Heartguard Plus Quick question please: Liberty's vet switched him to Heartguard Plus. I just opened the box to give him one and was floored by the large size of each dose (almost an inch long). He's used to much tinier pills. The box says for up to 25 lb.'s, and there's a Yorkie pictured. Is that much medicine really safe for a dog who is not 4 lb.s? |
Yep, I just checked...mine get the Heartgard Plus in the blue box (yorkie on the front) for up to 25lbs. My dogs range in size from 5lbs. to 8lbs. and they each get one dose at the beginning of each month. They've never had any ill effects from them, and they actually think that they are treats...silly pups!:p Debbie (Tea', Katie and Paige) |

Big Pill to Swallow Thanks guys for the input! I think I'll keep a close eye on him just to make sure there's no adverse reactions. |
Yep! That's the right one. Riley gets one every month and doesn't have any problems. I break it in two and just make sure he chews it. The package says: The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing. Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. |
Jada is a tad over 5lbs and I have given heartguard plus in the blue box for over 3 years. I do have to cut it into smaller pieces and make sure she eats it all. If I give her the whole block she wants to carry it around and find a hiding place for it. |
We got HeartGuard Plus from our Vet and trust our vet completely. We actually break the "chunk" apart and feed it in small amounts, she makes less mess that way and we know she got it all. |
In Pieces Liberty was given the Heartguard Plus in pieces as suggested. He, too, thought it was a treat! Seems to be doing just fine. ;-} |
I too was concerned over the size of the Heartgard because I had always used Interceptor. My vet told me not to break or half the Heartgard because it did not have that much in them to hurt them and it would not distrubute the meds correctly. I do break up little Rocky's because he is so little. I don't want him to get choked. As long as they take all of it, I can't see it would hurt. |
I've been giving since 12 weeks at 2 1/2 lbs. I also break into 4 pieces and she thinks it's a treat. |
