Information needed asap please Hello, My son purchased a 17 week old puppy for me ( he lives in another state ) and is planning to fly her to me however, when he took her for her health Certificate, he was told she had luxating patellas in both back legs. Between Stage 1 and 2. I know that it's common in small dogs. My question is because this was Discovered at such a young age, does that mean it could progress at an early stage as well. The contract covers a 1 yr. health guarantee. I'm not what to do and he leaving Monday. Would appreciate any input. Thank you, Meagan's mom |
Oh my, you do need info asap. I'm gonna bump this to see if someone can help you. Best wishes!! |
Thank you so much! |
Yes it can progress as she ages to the point where she needs surgey. |
I'm sure others can help more, but from what I understand, a young puppy can have luxating patellas but as they grow and the muscles develop, they can get better. There would be many precautions I'd do to help develop those muscles and prevent injury in a puppy, but I believe it happens with puppies. |
It's can get worse or it could stay the same. Please make sure the pup is not flying cargo. |
Grade 1 or 2 is a slight slipping of the kneecap. Many times dogs of that grade do not need the surgery but it can worsen over time. Buster was a grade 3 and I did have the surgery. If you got this dog from a breeder and your are considering exchanging it for another it is possible that the other dogs could possibly have the same issue since it is a genetic flaw. If the dog was purchased in a state that has puppy lemon laws you can try to get the breeder to reimburse you for expenses. You will have to look up the laws for your son's area and check since the dog is to be sent to you if that changes your rights. |
I would contact the breeder immediately myself! |
Thanks everyone. I have emailed the breeder and hope to here soon. |
I got one that has the same thing. My vet said its pretty common in yorkies. My breeder clearly states she doesnt reimburse for patellas. (I had no idea of what it was at the time) I guess its your call as to whether you want to move ahead. I decided to keep her and my vet said he didnt think it was a big concern.. |
My first girl, Zada, was 15 weeks old when I adopted her and she had grade 3 LP in both her back legs as well and by the time she was almost 19 months old the Vet. said she needed surgery, so I let him operate on both knees at the same time. A couple months later she was limping but that Vet. retired and move to Utah so I took her to an orthopedic surgeon. He had to do surgery on one of her knees again and told me the last Vet. did not deepen the groove the cap sits on. Also she should not have had that first surgery since she was not limping. He said he wouldn't operate on the other knee unless she started limping in it too. Then he checked the knees of my second Yorkie, Azrael, who is Zada's 1st cousin and only 5 weeks younger than Zada, and she has grade 3 LP in both her knees but he doesn't suggest having surgery on her unless she's limping. She's ended up having surgery for a medially luxating patella and ruptured cranial cruciate ligament. That was 10 months ago, and so far the other knee is holding up. With this information you can see that there is no real concrete answer to the question of if or when will they need surgery. There is no real answer. LP is very common in small dogs. |
