To neuter or not? So Jasper will be on one at the end of the month. He went through a humping phase a while back but doesn't bother now with my mums spayed Pomeranian. Which is good. I personally don't think I want to neuter him. I feel it boarders on mutilation, and people stay if you don't do it, they will have behavioural problems. I don't think it is fair to blame testorone on behaviour. Sure they can be territorial in some cases. But behaviour can come from diet, genes, environment and other factors. I like to think I am responsible and would never dream of letting him roam the streets and inpregnate a female dog. Does anyone else feel the same? |
You May be responsible and your boy still get out and roam. Will you be able to keep him from running out the front door when you are bringing groceries in the door and things like that. Also he will mostt likely mark in your house |
I am still not decided. I don't like surgery for surgery sake, my boy will be looked after as best he can be, never let out of the house without a lead and not intending to breed. He is only young so I will think about it and research a little longer. He is a humper, ( has a favourite blanket) has been from about 9 weeks old, he is pretty good house training wise and it seems only his meds (for allergies) cause little accidents. If he were marking or I found sound research that proved neutering would have health benefits I would definitely consider more positively, but right now I am not convinced. I believe there is a much greater problem with unwanted dogs in the States than there is here and this will likely have an impact on responses in this forum. |
We just had ours neutered last Friday at 6 months old. I didn't like the humping thing and I know that could continue he has only done it around other dogs but he was marking like mad in the house and hasn't since. I'm glad I had him fixed I believe in it and I can't say for sure he would never get out on me even though I'm convince he won't as we have always had to be super careful with our in door cat getting out but you just never know. |
Neuter There is a lot of discussion regarding the pros and cons of neutering. An earlier thread this year addressed this issue at length, and the research being done. My take was that if the dog would not be free to impregnate a female, it may be ok with few real disadvantages. In the US, neutering is almost a Must unless breeding, mainly to stop unwanted pregnancies. I believe in Europe neutering is not so common. If one feels it is the right decision to neuter, then it is thought that it is better done after the hormones have done their job and bone growth has ceased - after one year old. A hard decision! Good luck, whatever you decide. |
