Young yorkie and overweight Hello :) My 15 months old yorkie girl is overweight. I had bought her "light" petfood, but she doesnt want to eat it... She is eating pasta with meat and vegatables since she was a small puppie. Now I see she is too fat :( Anyone knows any recipes for homemade food for yorkies with overweight? Have a nice day!:aimeeyork |
I know adding green beans to their diet helps. It is a filler and my dogs really like them! If using canned, drain and rinse first. Low salt! Frozen or fresh is better! |
How overweight is she? |
She is 6,6lbs now and I believe she should be around 5,5lbs. |
How much are you feeding her a day? I hear a lot of people do 1/4 cup twice a day. My guy is only 6 months and he gets 1/4 cup twice a day plus half of 1/4 cup at lunch. But soon I will be just doing 1/4 cup twice a day. |
Princess Sophie loves green beans. I hadn't heard to rinse canned before so I'll be doing that. Thanks! |
I would ask the vet if they think she is over weight or not. If your going to home cook you need to make sure that you are getting recipes from a vet nutritionist and make sure your using a supplement. |
Joey gained too much weight after a tricks training class, I was feeding him his regular food and then feeding him lots of high calorie treats every day, so that he'd learn all his tricks. He was a great student, but vet said he was a pound overweight. He suggested that I cut his food by 1/3 and add a 5-6 green beans to a meal, so that Joey would feel full. He lost about 1-2 ounces a week, and this wasn't a hard diet for him. Slow but sure is the way to go. I'm concerned about your girl, eating pasta with meat and vegetables, which may be a balanced human diet, however it, isn't a balanced canine diet. If you are to home cook, you need to add a supplement made for dogs. Your dog may be overweight and malnourished, a common but an extremely unhealthy condition. |
