Heartgard: Full or Empty Stomach? Does is matter if I give the Heartgard to the boys on a full or empty stomach? The directions say that it can be crushed into a little bit of food, but it doesn't indicate if it is okay if the dog has had a full meal. |
Kristin, I usually put the heartguard in with morning treats of green beans. IDK if it matters if its on a full stomach or not. Mine have never had any issues with an upset tummy eating it this way. |
I don't think it matters.... I give Riley Heartgard Plus. He gets it on the 20th of each month usually in the morning after he has already eaten but if I forget I give it to him that evening. He LOVES it! Does circles for it. I break it into 2 and he chews them both down. I think I have read they are supposed to chew it and not swallow it whole.. |
Thank you ladies. :) |

Meant to add Ry has Never had any tummy issues after. :) |
Thank you Theresa, that is good to know. The guys are still licking their plates, lol. This is about the 5th time the guys have had Heartgard and they have done well with it too. The first month, they took their time chewing the little block. But the next time, Teddy swallowed his quickly and chased after Max to try to get his. :p I remembered to crumble the block this time and separate the boys. |

Never had a tummy issue and to be honest..I don't even remember if she had a full or empty tummy when I gave them to her. Probably sometimes full and sometimes empty. |

You would think it was a piece of Steak! Ry goes Nutso when he sees me getting it! |

I was just wondering...my pups are almost 7 months old, should I start giving them heartworm medication now or wait until the spring when I start taking them outside? Right now they only use pee pads and don't go outside and it's freezing so no mosquitoes yet. Also, do you give them the med year round or only during warm weather? Thanks! |
I'm glad to hear so many pups do well taking Heartgard :). ZoE only has 2 months of Interceptor left and we have to go to the vet this month for her heartworm test and I was planning to get her Heartgard. |
Coco loves HG too. She thinks it's a treat so it's very easy to get her to eat it. Giving her interceptor was a struggle every month and she always found ways to spit it out no matter what I hid it in. |
