My Yorkie doesn't drink water I have a one year old...Sammy. He eats Blue Mountain canned food. He was so picky in his first few months, we finally found one he will eat~~ so we have stuck to it. Our problem, and I think it is a problem, is this: I do not think he drinks enough water. He seldom drinks from his water bowl. When he does it is tiny amounts. Another clue is that most of the time he is slightly constipated. Not always, but certainly more than I think is normal. I do add a bit of water to his food each time.... but if I get it too watery he won't eat it!! Are there any suggestions for us? Thanks. |
Dogs who eat canned food or anything other than dry food tend to drink less. They get moisture from their food. You can encourage him to drink more by trying different water bowls (we switched to glass and my boys love it), change water sources (filtered?), and praising him every time you see him drink. If he is constipated occasionally, then I would supplement his diet (green beans?) and make sure he is getting enough exercise. Is the canned food a complete diet? Some canned foods are not nutritionally complete and should only be used as a topping. |
Water We've tried every kind of bowl under the sun. Yes, the food is grain free and a good ingredients. I've done research on it... it's rated 5 star. Green beans I will try...good idea. He likes vegies. I used to cook for him and I sorta burned out on it as busy as I am, and went back to canned. I guess I'll just keep adding a bit of water to his food as I have been doing. Thanks. |
mine has just started doing the same thing. She use to love water! I boil chicken breasts on the bone, cool skim the fat and store in ice cube trays. I melt a cube with some water in the micro and poor it over the kibble. It takes her a minute or two but i usually leave a little of the concentrated ice on top. Once she smells it and licks it she devours the bowl. I also take an ice cube during the day and crush it. She loves to chew ice! So she gets about 6oz a day. (2.5 breakfast, 1oz cube and 2.5 -3oz dinner) The surgeon who saw her today she she isnt the least bit dehydrated. |
oh and try frozen green beans, they get water from the ice on them too! |
Roxxie I feed mine prescription canned food since she has colitis. I use a small syringe a few times a day. She also won't eat out of a bowl I have to put it on the counter top . She was a rescue and is six years old and 4 pounds. Also refuses to play with a toy. She is going to be spayed I am hoping that will change her a little. But I do love her she's adorable. Good luck |
If need be, use a needless syringe to get some extra water into him. Yorkies tend to easily get dehydrated. But look at your food can, it should give the amount of moisture it contains so you can estimate how much his every serving is giving him in fluids. |

Always have your vet show you how to do it if your dog is showing signs of early dehydration and he finds you competent enough. You have to be sure to use no more than 1/2 teaspoon and slowly and patiently, little bit at a time, wait for swallowing between each squirt, put it in the side pocket of dog's mouth without the muzzle pointing up, not squirting until you are certain the water won't shoot directly down the throat and go into the bronchi. Thankfully, I've only had to do it back when Tibbe was always nauseated and having repetitive GI problems, running diarrhea and showing signs of early dehydration. He just wouldn't drink any water but the vet showed me how to administer water. Saved trips to the emergency vet in the middle of the night. |

My Cody underwent major surgery a few years ago, when he came home he wasn't drinking water and straining when he pooped. A very knowledgeable member gave me a suggestion which was, Make chicken soup do not add salt or onions, carrots, celery are fine to add flavor. When the chicken is cooked and broth has cooled skim off all the fat. Depending on how big the water bowl is add a teaspoon or two of the chicken broth to your pups water. Do not add to much as most dogs will drink the entire bowl, then throw it up. The rest of the broth freeze in ice cube trays, The chicken you can make chicken salad for your self. You can add a cube or 1/2 a cube of the broth to your pups water. Chicken flavored water most dogs cannot resist. It got my dog to drink water, no more straining to poop and saved me from bringing him back to the vet for IV fluids. |
