Dry crusty skin
 
My yorkie harley has dry crusty spots on his chest and back underside where he has little hair. Is this from using the wrong shampoo and conditioner or from him going outside and getting wet in the snow several times a day?

Cold dry winters do take a major toll on all of our skin and heating the house without having a humidifier is the major cause of dry itchy skin.
I don't shampoo my girls but twice a month in the winter, and then when I do, I always give them a hot oil treatment. I also buy concentrated shampoo so I can dilute it down more in winter than in summer, and finally rinse and rinse and rinse. If not rinsed thoroughly, it will dry the skin even further. Then always use a good conditioner.
Next, make sure your baby is getting the Omega fatty acids in his diet each day.

If there are actual crusts, you truly need to go the vet asap. It could be infection, seborrhea, or various other things. Crusts aren't normal, so some sort of treatment is in order for your kiddo. Is he itching or anything else? Does he smell musty, sour, or anything?

it looks like really dry patches, he smells like his normal doggie smell, I havent given him a bath in a couple weeks because of this, but have been once a week.

do you get the hot oil treatments at the pet store? I usually buy his stuff at petsmart.

Has a skin scrape been done by the vet to check for parasites or fungus

He has to go to the vet Friday but for a check up, Ill have them look then, It seems to be clearing up since I have been drying him when he comes in from outside and haven't given him a bath. He is getting a bath before I take him to the vet though, Im gonna try another shampoo and conditioner too.:aimeeyork

They can do a really quick easy skin scrape and look at it under the scope...it will show bacteria (good kind and bad kind, that is) overgrowth if it's there...may be a good idea to check this.
