Mixed message about garlic? I keep reading conflicting information about garlic for our pups. On one site I read that it's toxic. Another site extols its virtues. I checked into Canine Caviar based on another thread. It has whole clove garlic listed in the ingredients in the Lamb formula. So what gives? Is it or ain't it? :confused: |
i have also found treats that contain garlic. i avoid giving anything with garlic because i dont feel its safe imo. |
It's what you want it to be. :) Seriously though, I don't really know. The conflicts are out there and studies support both. Whether they're studies or "studies" is another issue. They say a little bit of garlic in moderation is OK. Zeus doesn't get any garlic though because I'm just too paranoid. But I don't feed him pre-made food so that's a toughy. I do know that Canine Caviar is very much loved on this forum. |

It is toxic. A small amount occasionally. will not hurt a dog (although I wouldn't try it if the dog has hemolytic anemia already). If somebody feels a food with garlic is best or their dig, RBCs should ge cheked to make sure there is no destruction. |
We gave our puppy a TINY bit of garlic when he was coughing, as we read it can help (just like with humans). I don't think they would enjoy it just like that. But if food contains a little bit of garlic, I don't think it will be harmful. We feed our puppy Canine Caviar. |

Well, I am relived to hear the "small amounts" as my DH was letting Princess Sophie lick his pizza fingers last night. LOL I keep telling him that there are things that other dogs can have that yorkies cannot have. I don't think he believes me but I keep telling him anyway! |

I always put several whole garlic cloves in their pearled barley or tricolor quinoa when cooking, then remove and discard the garlic when done. The garlic will be right on top of the pearled barley or tricolor quinoa, so easy to find. The oil from the garlic cooked into the food does have some healthy benefits, but it also helps keep fleas off. |
Garlic in large amounts is toxic many pet companies make garlic pills for dogs to combat fleas |
Wouldn't feed garlic in any form. |
