Oh my god...Mia's first flea. So I've had dogs before...Mia is the 3rd dog I've had but I've never actually seen a flea...until last night...on valentines day of course! Mia is 16 weeks old and weighs 3 pounds. I was rubbing her tummy last night and a flea crawled acrossed her tummy! Boy did I jump and so did the flea. I didn't catch it though. I took her straight to the tub and soaked her down. The flea fell out and died :-) I haven't put flea guard on her because she was so little but now that she is 3 pounds I'll do that. What a freaky night! Did any of your Yorkies skin get infected by the flea guard? Just curious! And thankfully she had her last set of shots today and they also made sure she was flea free :-) |
Oh my, I would have jumped out of my skin too! Don't know if it would have been because of the repulsion or the shock of finding one. LOL We haven't gotten to the "flea" preventative yet so I'm afraid I can't help but so happy you were able to get rid of it. Just hate those pesky little buggers!!! |

It can cause a skin reaction in some animals but it is usually upon the initial application and should go away in a few days to a week. It depends on the sensitivity level really. |
I hate fleas. I thought it was pretty safe in the winters in our area but I guess not. Hopefully that was the only one. |

Um I just meant in general a flea guard...as in something to put on to prevent fleas. Sorry if I wasn't specific enough for you. I do have frontline and advantage that the vet gave me. I'll be sure to mention the exact terminology next time to prevent people thinking I don't know what I'm talking about. |

Oh no lol I haven't even used either yet. The vet gave me advantage in December and she gave me frontline just today. I've chosen not to put either of them on yet due to her weight. But now she is 3 pounds so I'll probably put advantage on her and see how that goes. However she just had a bath last night and I've heard that you should wait a couple days to apply flea protection so the natural oils in the skin have a chance to settle so its not as drying. My sister recommended that due to her puppy having a reaction after putting on advantage after a bath. |
Oh heavens! I can't even imagine not putting flea meds on my pup around here. LOL Missouri is awful for fleas. In spring and summer and into fall, they are terrible here. |

I typically don't do flea or heart worm preventative or from about November/December until around March/April because of how cold it gets here. Fortunately, we have not had any issues with either. We did have one infestation before Yorkies when we had our Sheltie. It was a particularly warm and rainy summer that year and our vet said the fleas were having a field day - the vet had seen more people for preventatives/ways to get rid of fleas. It was a bit undertaking, like Maximo said, vacuuming, washing, etc daily but it did work. Good luck - oh, neither of mine have had any reactions to the topical flea controls. |
