Anyone feed their yorkies Homemade food? Hi all I am new here and need some advice Please!!! I just adopted a 4 Yr old yorkie, she weighs 5# She is so sweet and so excited!! but her old owner feed her nothing but cat food! I have tried a bunch of different dry and can foods and she won't eat them. it was 3 days without eating so I got really worried. I don't know if it was right or not but I cooked a pound of hamburger added some mashed carrots and peas and some cottage cheese, Gave her a 1/2 of a cup of it and she ate it all!! and has been for 2 feedings a day, for the last 3 days. What I need to know is 1. is this ok for her to eat? 2. should i be giving her a multivitamin? if yes what kind? If not what do you who home cook for your Yorkies feed them. any advice would be of great help!! because this has been the only thing I have been able to get her to eat |
Hi and welcome to YT. Dogs love cat food because it has more protein and fat but it is not recommended to feed. ASPCA | Feeding Dogs Cat Food If you look at the top of the diet page you will see links for recipes. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...od-treats.html You have to be careful when home cooking to make sure your baby gets the proper nutrition . Hopefully some home cookers will add their thoughts. I give Buster Kibble but supplement with boiled chicken, eggs, non fat yogurt. Best wishes to you and your baby. |
I found a great product called u-stew Its a mix that you add to whatever "cooked" meat your dog likes and it makes it a complete balanced meal! I have ordered some. And talked to alot who have used it and swear by it. I beleive when done properly with something like this to make it balanced, its the best you can feed your dog. And wayyyyyyyyyyy better than any bought kibble:) |
Also to answer your questions:) Yes all the things you fed her are safe foods. But not balanced. Certainly okay for her to eat though until you buy or order something to make it complete. You will want to watch her stools to make sure she doesnt get diarhea. I know out of the meats beef can be fatty and harder on the belly. But many dogs do just fine |
I homecook for Taycie. I have been for a few months now. I recommend using a Board Certified Nutritionist. I use Dr. Remillard. Diets like the one you are feeding above are not safe for long periods of time because they are not balanced correctly. PetDiets - VNC putting pets' health first! You can buy a diet for her on her website for $25. Any additional recipes are $12 at the time of purchase as well. So if you want some to alter between, that is the best way to do it. You will have to buy a supplement called Balance IT as well at that is about $45. The Balance IT will last awhile for one dog. Its a 600 gram container and Taycie gets about 2.2 grams.. so it should last me about 272 days! So... it is really not a bad price at all. And it makes it super easy. I did a nutrional consultion for Taycie so our diet is a little different because of her MVD but I have been nothing but impressed with the results. Dr. R is wonderful! |
