With Asm. Hagman's intervention, Asm. Gomez withdrew the bill from the Consent Calendar & it has been temporarily tabled in order for the bill's author, the California Public Health Officers, to consult with Dr. Dodds on our concerns. Will keep you posted.

URGENT ALERT: California Rabies Bill AB 272 http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/13-14/...ed_asm_v97.pdf, which seeks to lower the age at which dogs must be vaccinated from 4 months to 3 months, will soon be scheduled for a final Assembly vote, and if passed, it will move on to the Senate. Prior Assembly votes supporting AB 272 are baffling as all 4 Assembly analyses (three of which contain inaccurate information on state rabies laws) indicate AB 272 will NOT accomplish the stated goals of its sponsors, the Health Officers Association of California.

Lowering the required age of rabies vaccination to 3 months increases the likelihood of adverse vaccine reactions as well as failure to immunize due to residual maternal antibodies and interference from other puppy vaccines given at 3 months. There is significant opposition to AB 272 from The Rabies Challenge Fund, The California Federation of Dog Clubs, dog organizations, veterinarians, and private individuals.

I'm dumfounded, it's like they don't think this is important in any way shape or form. In the video that you linked in post 21, Dr. Jean Dodds had suggested that they don't seem to understand many of the materials that went into making this bill and obviously they aren’t taking this bill seriously. They don’t realize the repercussions for dog when there isn’t even a rabies problem in California. Dr. Dodds thinks because a rabies vaccine initially lowers their preexisting maternal immunity, it will make them more vulnerable to rabies until the vaccine can kicks in, while also making them more vulnerable to diseases such as distemper and parvo. There is no advantage to giving the rabies vaccine this early and may cause great harm to our pets. I wish they could watch Dr. Dodds video, what's wrong with them?

It sounds like they are just listening to the state's vet, but she has some of the stats wrong in her report, has anyone notified her of this? I think they are just doing what she recommended and she's the doctor so she knows best.

This is wayyy to much control over the people. Im completely against this, Im an extremely responsible dog owner. I was fined $330 for not giving my dog the rabies vaccine on time because I was on vacation. I was literally 2 weeks late on it!! Im in Florida by the way, this is exactly the reason why most people don't register or vaccinate the dogs at all. Instead of having control over the people they are loosing control. I should also add that when my Chihuahua got her rabies vaccine at 10 months she got a small seizure which was super scary. The vet herself said she was too small for it, she was weezy the rest of the day. :mad:

Nancy, Dr. W. Jean Dodds and I, along with numerous veterinarians & others have given all the Assembly Committee members accurate data & medical data regarding the inaccuracies in this bill. As one of the world's leading authorities on veterinary vaccines, as well as being a practicing veterinarian & California resident, you would think they MIGHT listen to Dr. Dodds, but they haven't thus far.

Attached is a letter from The Rabies Challenge Fund, a California charitable trust of which Santa Monica resident, veterinarian & world-renowned veterinary vaccine research scientist Dr. W. Jean Dodds is Co-Trustee, in OPPOSITION to Rabies Bill AB 272. This bill will likely be assigned to your committee this week, after passing the Assembly last week.

AB 272 would require that all dogs be vaccinated against rabies at the age of 3 months instead of 4 months. Lowering the required age of rabies vaccination to 3 months not only increases the likelihood of adverse vaccine reactions when added to other puppy vaccines given at 3 months, but also may fail to adequately immunize due to residual maternal antibodies.

Please bear in mind that there are no veterinarians or veterinary medical practitioners amongst the bill’s sponsors, Health Officers Association of California—the association consists of physicians and speak with no more authority on veterinary medical issues than veterinarians would in sponsoring a bill regulating human medical care.
