Ignoring old food during transition. I'm transitioning Charlie from purina puppy chow(yuck) to Halo Wild Salmon puppy formula and he's picking the Halo kibbles out and eating them and ignoring the old stuff. Is there anything I can do or should I just be prepared for some potentially nasty poops? |
This is a common problem when transitioning. Most of the time, things work out. Just keep an eye on him. |

Sometimes I moisten the food very well and mix it together so the dog has to eat more of the old stuff than he would and gradually decrease the water each day or so as I add more of the new, which they usually like because it is new. |
Mine have never been "cooperative" when transitioning, and it never caused problems. Yes, some (maybe even most, I don't know) dogs will have a problem if they make a sudden switch, so it is good to take the precaution to transition slowly. But, like I have seen with my own dogs, you might not see any problem at all if they only want to eat the new stuff and leave the old stuff behind. |
My dogs switch between foods with no problem. I never really transition them. Some dogs can do that and others can't. If he's only eating the new food and hasn't developed any problems, then I think you're ok. |
When I switch Joels food I mix them in a ziplock bag and leave it over night and he doesn't notice. |
Thanks, all! He ate only the new today, left the old brand kibble in the bowl and he pooed twice with no problems so hopefully he's good. |
As long as he doesn't have tummy issues (growling, upset tummy or diarrhea, or maybe even constipation) it should be ok. Continue to offer the old food. If after another day or two you notice his eating the new food is not causing any issues, stop the old food and stick with the new. Just in case, if he does have tummy issues, you can give him probiotics or canned pumpkin. Careful not to pick up any canned pumpkin pie filling. :) Either item is good to keep on hand anyway. |
