How long can she go with out eating safely? How long can you stick with the if she is hungry she will eat thing? When does it become dangerous? I fear Callie is way to stubborn and smart for this but sense she has been on her new medicine she is not eating much and its not fun to get her to eat so I guess I am going to try the she will eat when she is hungry then but I want to know how long that can go on? |
I am no help in this area, but I hope she feels better soon and eats! |

I'm so freaked out at hyperglycemia that I would not let my puppy go without food for long. Why don't you just add something to their food to make it more enticing? At the vet's yesterday I was told I can add some water or broth to kibbles. Hope Callie starts eating soon! |
I don't like when they go without eating, i always have nutri drops ready at home for when my dogs decide they don't want to eat for whatever reason. best of luck with Callie.. hugs, |
Me too. I always have nutri cal on hand. Just in case |
I asked my vet the samething when I took Honey. He told me that they will not let their selves starve to death. He said the if the get hungry they will go and eat. It still makes me worry. |
Can you just soften some of the food and put a bite in her mouth every hour after 8 fasting? Surely she'll get some of it down. I do this to Tibbe when he's gone very long and he's 5.3 lbs. of so but I worry. He won't spit it out. |
I don't like when they don't eat, but I remind myself that they fast for 8 - 12 hours before surgery, so for the average dog that must be safe. Plus, you have the Nutrical or Karo on hand just in case. Be sure to hold all treats and chews until she eats. Put her food down and don't make a big deal out of it, otherwise she will pick up on your anxiousness and maybe think there is a reason to not eat what is in the bowl. You can always do tricks and use her food as reward too. With my guys, the more I force them to do something, the more likely they are to not want to do it. I have trick them into thinking everything is their idea. :D Best wishes. |

Trust me I am very worried I have tried everything canned food, canned food mixed with dry, freeze dried raw, soaked in water dry food, crushed up dry food and even regular chicken. I think its the medicine I hate it but I am so confused with what to do we go back for a check up on the meds at the end of the month so hopefully all my questions will get answered. Ever sense her tooth procedure it seems like her teeth hurt or something maybe I am just paranoid but she doesn't much want to chew bully sticks she was really in love with doing and when I gave her the soaked dry food this morning she swallowed it never chewed it which is VERY weird for her she has never not chewed. |
What medication is she on? Some meds will upset their belly in whih case we recommend switching meds depending on what the meds are for. |
Have you talked to your vet? If someone calls with these sypmtoms and acting like painful mouth we always recommend coming in for dr to look. And while the average healthy adult dog can go 12 hours safely with no food. There are actually dogs that will starve themselves before eating something they dont like. There are also many medications we send home that require a stomach protectant for this exact reason. You are welcome to pm me if you want more info;) |
Taylor, I think you've gotten good advice so far here on YT but a quick call to her vets office won't hurt if she truly isn't eating at all. Maybe she's just getting smart in her teenage years & has figured out if she holds out long enough, mommy will give her some of the "yummy" stuff. My Bella does this about once a month but truthfully she's never gone more than 24 hours without eating. It's really hard for me, she has a queasy tummy & has been known to refuse food then throw up bile :( Good luck! |
