Is he eating enough? My little boy came home with me yesterday and he doesn't eat very much. He's 12.5 weeks and some Royal Canine kibble was sent home with me. The breeder made it look like he'd eat a almost a cup and a 1/2 a day. He's had access to the food all day but takes a kibble here and there. He weighs 36ish ounces or about 2 pounds. He seems fine and happy so I'm hoping his little appetite will pick up soon! |
He's probably just more interested in his new surroundings than he is the content of his food bowl. If he is peeing, pooping, and playing normally, he's probably fine. Are his eyes bright and shiny? Nose cool and damp? Don't make the mistake I did and start messing with his diet! I've spent the last 3 weeks worrying myself to death whether or not Sam is getting enough to eat, etc. Although he was sent home with kibble, he won't eat anything dry now. At ALL. And my boy is a light eater. He's gone as long as 10 hours overnight with nothing, and will still wait to eat breakfast until after we have play time. |
Wow a cup and 1/2 seems like a lot. I looked on the Royal Canine site and they say 1/4 cup a day for 2.2 lb pup for a 3 month old dog. Here is the site with the amounts Home Royal Canin USA / Products / Products / Dog Products / Size Health Nutrition / X-SMALL (dogs up to 8 lb) / X-SMALL Puppy - Royal Canin |
Definitely go by what the bag says. This is what my vet always tells me. When Mandie was just 3 lbs and 10 oz, she only got a tad over a half of a cup of food a day. I think even a cup is way too much for him right now. I'd give him 1/2 cup (at most) a day and give a supplement like Nutrical. With that said, I've always said a puppy can't be overweight. I believe that. So if he WANTS to eat, let him. Just free feed. I always free feed...I think it keeps dogs/pups from going into the mindset that they have to eat everything they see because it will be gone soon. Just my way...everyone is different. |

He'll probably be eating somewhere around 1/3 to 1/2 a cup max. at that age/size. |
appetite happy He finally ate really well this evening. I was thinking that maybe he ate about 1/4 of a cup or less each day the past 2 days and he definitely ate 1/4 cup plus kept trying to find adult nuggets outside in the yard from the sloppy guard dogs. Which I took away from him. Thank you so much for the wonderful suggestions and information! I'll enjoy looking at the recipes and learning how to make him homemade food this coming week but don't want to upset his little system right now. He did get a little car sick once this afternoon, his breeder warned me but I hadn't intended on rushing back out again and Pooky didn't have time to relax after a snack. |
