Brushing Teeth Having gone through dental surgery for 2 of my cats I'm worried that I will have to go through it again with my pup! Any suggestions on getting him used to teeth brushing? I bought this on the weekend: Arm & HammerŪ Clinical Pet Care Maximum Strength Gum Care Toothpaste & Brush Set for Dogs - Dog - Sale - PetSmart And he is so terrified of the tooth brush I don't know what to do! Should I go for an oral gel instead? |
I use C.E.T enzymatic toothpaste, it helps remove & prevent tartar. Just be consistent & brush every night b4 bedtime, he'll get used to it. You can start getting him used having things put into his mouth by using a gauze or cloth wrapped around your finger. Put some doggie toothpaste on it & rub it gently on his teeth. I use those dual ended toothbrushes, the small end. |
We've only had Pepper a couple of weeks but we have been brushing his teeth every night since he came home. We use a fingertip brush that I put over my thumb and the Wahl brand doggy toothpaste - it smells like vanilla frosting! I started by letting him lick and sniff/nip at the toothbrush to get him used to the feel in his mouth. I also put a bit of toothpaste on my finger and let him lick it off and he seemed to like it. It's usually a joint effort where we wrap him in a Yorkie burrito (a great tip I got from YT!) and my husband sits with him on his lap and I brush his teeth. He still doesn't love it, but he tolerates it much better now. We do it a little after dinner and play lots right before and right after. He also gets a carrot treat right after so he doesn't hate it as much. Lots and lots of praise while we brush and afterwards too! The whole process takes under 5 minutes now. :) Hope that helps! |
Thanks :D I'm going to get the finger brush and I'm also going to try getting a gel type product that I saw at the store. See if that works as well. |
