Reason to worry? I am getting more and more freaked out about hyperglycemia! I try to make sure Dexter eats enough, but he is such a picky eater! I'm always afraid he is not eating enough. He gained a pound over a week and a half that we had him. Are there any other precautions we should take to make sure our puppy grows up healthy? |
How big is he and how old? Getting older and bigger the less you have to worry. I always made sure mine ate every few hours if they were small and or real young. Also, have nutrical on hand in case you notice any symptoms of hypoglycemia. Sometime just playing really hard can make their blood sugar go low so make sure he gets plenty of rest between playing and that he eats something. If Dexter hasn't been checked by you vet I would do that. It is also important that you know the symptoms of hypoglycemia and you know where the nearest ER vet is. I have had several puppies go hypoglycemic, but as I knew what was happening I was able to get their sugar up either with nutrical, pancake syrup or Karo syrup. I gave it to them and then headed to the vet. Hopefully Dexter will be just fine but it's good you're aware of it. Dexter is a cutie. |
He is 12 weeks and 5.2lbs. We went to our first vet check up a week ago and the vet said he looks good. Next one is in a week, so we will see then. Should I keep Karo syrup at home just in case? Where do I get that? |
I would keep some nutrical on hand...better than karl syrup |

What are you feeding the little guy? |
We were feeding him Iams and Cesar's for wet food (what breeder told us to get). But we just bought Canine Caviar kibble a for puppies and Nutro Ultra wet food and we mix in about a teaspoon of wet food to kibbles so he eats it. The other stuff is going back to the store! We are new parents so we are learning as we go :) |
