Eye Drainage Tip
 
My vet told me that in order to get rid of the eye drainage that causes the staining to put two drops of Visine A (antihistomine) in his eyes twice a day.

I haven't had too much of a problem with my little pup's eyes yet --- but then I am comparing him to the Bichon I have. Can you imagine a pure white dog with gooky eyes....the hair and area under a Bichon's eyes turn a dark red and stay that way. It is a real problem.... So, a Yorkie doesn't seem bad at all to me.

I think I remember someome talking about a food that would reduce staining - not tearing, but reduce the darkness of the tears so that the stain would not be so dark. I may be completely crazy though - wouldn't be the first time! :D

I've heard to stay away from food with beet juice listed in the ingredients.

I've heard it's the beet pulp in the food that causes the stains.... Don't know if that's true or not though!

A fellow YT memeber recommended EyeEnvy (www.EyeEnvy.com). It works wonders. I tested it on my parent's beagle who had horrible staining, and it's just about gone! I wish I had taken before/after photos....

The Visine makes sense to me though. Don't quote me on this, but I'm guessing it probably rinses everything out of the eye that could cause irritation and keeps theirs eye moist, so excessive tearing won't happen in the first place. I know I use it when my contacts are dry or I have something stuck in there, so why can't my dog use it too? Thanks for the tip!

Fortunately, we don't have this problem...I guess we are lucky. I will add this though...something to think about. I was previously an Opthalmic Tech and as far as for HUMANS (again, not sure about with dogs) Visine is the worst thing you could possibly put in your eye...any form of Visine. It has small abrasives that can lead to corneal scarring. Again...might be something you want to check into? Just a thought... :)

Interesting, I've never heard that.... Is this true with the salines used for contact lenses as well??

No...it is specific to the Visine brand. At least from what we saw in our office. The Dr. I worked for would chew his patients out if they used Visine, well in a nice, helpful way. But yes, Visine for contacts is really bad for them and will literaly eat away at them, causing them to be uneven and to cause corneal ulcers. He never complained about the other Saline brands...he really liked Blink and Clean (B&L, I think) and TheraTears Contacts. Well, his wife dealt with contacts/glasses, he did the infections, transplant surgeries, etc.

Thanks for saying this. I didn't comment on the original post because I did not know for sure about dogs but I did know this about Human's. I think she should not be putting Visine in her dogs eyes period since you have posted what I was thinking..

If I am not mistaken Eye Envy is for cleaning the tear stains under the eye.

Thanks for the info on the Visine! I'd never heard of that.... Maybe that's why my contacts never last as long as they should.....

It is, you shouldn't actually put it in their eyes. But I've noticed since I've been using it, she isn't tearing as much, and when she does, it isn't staining.
