So despite all the posts about food... I'm still confused!!! I know the answer is out there in the thousands of posts about food... but I just had to ask... I will be the first to admit ... that when I adopted Clyde (he was my very first dog) I was not very educated at ALL about dog ownership. The first vet I ever had wasn't good either. He actually had told me that Kibbles & Bits was a perfectly healthy for my dogs to eat. I stopped using that vet after I discovered that they were not good (he was my very first vet, too, so it took a couple visits for me to figure that out as well). That vet office has long since been closed down for botched neutering and other such negative services (Clyde wasn't neutered there). As I started to learn of the importance of healthy diet I slowly started to transitioning to healthier foods. I made the switch in this oder (over the period of three years): Kibbles & Bits, to Iams, to Science Diet, to Wellness, to Wellness Core, to Blue Buffalo, to Innova (just started this past Sunday). Clyde's seizures induced during the month of December is believed to be because of his constant (but unknowing) consumption of Beneful dog food. Since this incident I have been FREAKING OUT about making sure Clyde & Dexter eat healthily. Is Innova better than Blue Buffalo? And if it is should Innova be a healthy enough food to not need to switch again? Both of my dogs like the food! |
I can't tell you which food is the best because they all have flaws but I want to suggest you check out the company who makes the food as well as the food itself. I also suggest grain free. Picking a good food that your dogs enjoy can be really hard so good luck. |

I definitely do need to step up my own personal research about the different foods and companies, though. Picking out a good food that my dogs both like has definitely been somewhat of a challenge! Thanks! |

Go to Chewy.com and read about Canine Cavar I recently switched to this and it has helped Dolly itching and she really likes it. |
I personally don't think there is "one" dog food better then the other. For about 6 months I went crazy over it. Trying to find the MAGICAL dog food that was the healthiest. But, during all of the that what I failed to learn was how IMPORTANT quality control measures are handled, if they have nutritionists on staff, if they do testing.. Yes, I mean testing because I don't want my dog being the guinea pig of it. So for me, that is what I would be looking at if my dog ate over the counter dog food. I am more about researching the company. Bottom line what works for your dogs may not work for someone else's.. I tried so many popular brands on YT and they all failed Taycie. For Taycie we home cook for medical reasons. It works the best for us so far. |
I think you really do just have to see what works best for your pup, and for yourself. As I posted in another thread, if your little one refuses a food, or has digestion problems, it doesn't matter one whit how well the food is rated on paper or a website. I tried for 2 solid weeks to get Sam to eat the Wellness, based on my own research and budget. I finally gave up when he went almost 24 hours without a single bite. I went last night and bought Simply Nourish from PetSmart. So far, so good! He happily ate it last night, and this morning with a small spoonful of canned. I'm sure it will be frowned on that I gave him a "store brand" food. But I don't give a rip, because my boy is actually eating. Unless or until I have reason to be concerned, and as long as he is healthy and happy, I'm perfectly happy with it, too. |
Innova Prime should be a decent food, and much better than a lot of foods you buy at big pet stores like Petco, etc. If your dogs like it and do well on it, that's what is most important. Natura (maker of Innova, Evo, Heathwise, and others) used to be an independent company but is now owned by Proctor and Gamble. As far as I know, the food is still made in the Natura plant in Fremont, Nebraska. |

I am sorry you are going through this  But Innova is something which "might not be as good as it was" since Proctor and Gamble acquired it. I have heard from the pet food stores to avoid Natura Pet foods after it was acquired by P&G. Same holds good for Royal Canin as well. They are changing their formula. I am not sure if I am the right person to suggest, but please check Canine Caviar. There are lots of good reviews. But I am no expert in this area. However, reading all the reviews of CC, this might be beneficial for your baby. |
I don't think this thread is going to make it any clearer for you lol Here - I feed Blue Buffalo and it works great and Mandie loves it AND I trust the company :) |
If there is one thing I have learned in the almost 4 years of dog parenthood, that is the search for the "perfect" dog food is ALWAYS ongoing! I will always be on the lookout for better food, toys, harnesses, what have you when it comes to my boys--and I'm sure that other YT parents out there know what I mean!:D |
pick a food that has no corn, wheat and no by products, bha, bht and exothiquin spelling is not right, those are the bad things, and something that your dog does well on. I personally like grain free food |
Video on choosing dog food Here is. Good video on choosing food.... Reading labels. Par 1 is good, also Dr. Karen Becker: How to Choose a Good Dog Food - Part 2 (Video) Dr. Karen Becker: How to Choose a Good Dog Food (Video) |
I'm definitely starting to realize that the search for the perfect food is never ending ... thanks for the suggestions, and videos, and advice! I thought I was going to be able to stick with Innova, but I've noticed over the past couple of days my dogs have been turning their noses up at it (spoiled little babies). I'll try Blue (again) or maybe I will try some homemade food! I don't really know yet, but I definitely appreciate the advice :p |
