Raw food pricing I know several people on here give their babies raw and say that its cheaper. How is that? I have three (10 lbs, 9 lbs, and 5 lbs) and I have tried going raw on at least 3 occasions. The problem always comes down to the price. I can't afford $150-$200 a month in dog food. So am I missing something? I feed according to the directions so they are not being overfed. I have tried Honest Kitchen, Nature's Variety, Bravo, and most recently I was looking to try Stella and Chewy's. According to Stella and Chewy's feeding guidelines for freeze dried I would need about 8 bags of the 32 oz a month. That's $200/month. Am I miscalculating somewhere? Because that is definitely way more expensive then feeding the Blue Buffalo they eat right now. :( |
I didn't read any posts about raw being cheaper but it is not as far as I am concerned. I find it pretty expensive but with the small amount that my two (yorkie and maltese) eat it isn't too bad monthly. |
Pre-made raw like Stella & Chewy's or Nature's Variety are most likely not going to be cheaper than a premium kibble. But those feeding a Prey Model Raw diet where you portion out your own meats, bones, and organs can do it for relatively cheap, especially if you have small dogs. I haven't done much research into the feeding methods and costs of PMR but hopefully others who feed that way can give you an estimate on what they spend on food and whatnot. I just have one small dog to feed so I'm not too concerned about the cost of her food but pre-made raw is something that I use just to supplement her diet simply because of the cost :) |

We do live in a high cost-of-living (1 bedroom apartment is $1600-$2200/month!!) and we spend about $60 / month on our two boys. This includes a few days of "emergency backups" (I.e., if we forget to go to the store...). Since it's based on weight, Zeus gets 5 oz / day and Ody gets 5.5 oz / day. I have done the research on the same food we buy here at home and just a couple of hours away, it would only cost us $40-$45 / month if we lived there. :( So it's really relative to where you live, lol. |
