Liver shunt help I've just rescued an 18 month old 2 1/2 lb yorkie who may have a liver shunt. I need information on whetger or not to proceed with surgery or just leave her on medication. Does anyone have forst hand experience? Many thanks |

She will have periodic bile acid test done. She has gain weight and has more energy. There is definitely a noticeable difference. Hope this helps. |
Moses was asymptomatic and suddenly had a UTI. He is 2. I took him to the vet who immediately diagnosed liver shunt and he also had a bladder stone the size of a marble. After an ultrasound, I was referred to a surgeon who is amazing. He was able to cauterize the shunt and he also opened his bladder and removed the stone. Like I said, Moses was asymptomatic and wasn't underweight and didn't have any of the other liver shunt symptoms. Since he was only 2, he was ok with doing the surgery. The only drawback was the cost. Be prepared for about $3000. But I figured it was worth it to not have to worry about him every month, and try to give him meds daily. It's been about 8 weeks and he is doing great! |
Many thanks for the info. I've researched until I'm darn near blind and I still can't determine the success rate for the surgery. Little Bit appears to be healthy however the breeder I rescued her from had her on medication for liver shunt despite the fact no testing had been done. She is scheduled for an ultrasound tomorrow. I don't mind giving her meds every day as I have two other special needs yorkies that require constant meds and care. She's full of beans and mischief. My concern is that she is so tiny I'm not sure about putting her under if there is another way to go that will allow her a good quality of life. |
Good luck tomorrow with the test. My Cali has internal shunts MVD and does very well on a low protein diet only. Hopefully your baby will not need surgery. |
