Vaccine ? We just got a new Yorkie pup. She is 11 weeks old today. She had the Parvovirus and Coronavirus vaccines and is scheduled for her Leptospirosis in a week or two. My wife read something about the Leptosprosis vaccine should not be administered to toy breeds. That Leptospira bactiria has been responsible for 70% of post-vaccination DHLPP anaphylactic shock reactions. Toy breeds and puppies younger then 12 weeks old seem to have the highest rate of reactions to this bacterin. Just wanted to know if anyone out there heard of this or had any negative experience with this vaccine. |
If Lepto is very high risk in your area maybe wait until the pup is a bit older and make sure your vet gives a benadryl shot before the Lepto shot and stay at the vet for at least an hour after receiving the shot. If Lepto is not bad in your area then just don't get it. I personally get it because my mom had a goat die of Lepto but if its not in your area or very rare in your area just don't get it. |
The majority of our vets down here do not even offer Lepto....it is not prevalent in this area and the statistics on the adverse reactions to the vaccine that your wife gave you, are correct. If absolutely necessary, premedicate the pup with Benadryl, wait 15-20 minutes, give the vaccine, and then hang around the vet office for another 30 minutes. And if I had to give the Lepto, I would wait until the baby was a bit older.... |
I personally do not give any of mine he Lepto. Their files at the vets have a red flag on the front reminding them. Mine aren't outside much and I don't think we're in a risky area for it. If you do get it make sure you stay at the vets office for a little while to make sure there is no reaction. |
Like others have said, I would not do Lepto unless it's high risk in your area and I'm guessing it's not. That vaccine has been cited with severe side effects on dogs. Ultimately, I don't think it's worth it, especially for such young and tiny pup. |
I do not give mine the Lepto shot. I had one that had a bad reaction and I almost lost her. |
