Is hypoglycemia life long? Do only puppies have problems with hypoglycemia? I can't seem to find the answer to this question. I know dogs that are ill or not eating very well can have it. Is it in mostly small yorkies? Also at what age is it safe to start 2 meals a day? Teeka is 6 1/2 months and 3.6 pounds. I am wondering if it would be ok to skip her noon meal. I am not able to just leave her food out, because my other dogs would gobble her puppy food! |

As an adult there are certain conditions that can also cause this, if your pup is still having problems I would consult your vet. Feeding 2 good meals 2ce a day, I would think would be fine, but because your pup is soooo small I would consult with your vet. |
She isn't having any problems with hypoglycemia. When we first brought her home she was on a 4 meals a day feeding schedule. I would love to free feed her but that isn't going to happen! I am just wondering if it would be safe to try to spread her meals to twice a day with her size. She is very active and healthy! Just not sure if it is necessary to feed her quite as often. She is an excellent eater and gets some healthy treats in between meals, too. |
I would do noon meals until she is a year. But once they are an adult they should not get hypoglycemia unless something is wrong with them. |
Georgie is 4lbs at 7 years old and since he was about a year old he has been eating twice a day. We do give him a little snack in the evenings before bed. He has never had any issues with Hypoglycemia. |
Unless they have a medical condition that is bringing on the hypoglycemia, once they hit 4 lbs, I would feel safe going down to 2 meals a day. Especially if hypoglycemia has not ever been an issue with your baby, and she gets snacks between meals....she will be fine. Now if she has ever had an episode of hypoglycemia, you probably would be better off continuing with the 3 meals a day....with a snack at bedtime, to carry her thru the night, until she gets some age/weight on her. |
Thank you everyone! I will continue on the same schedule. Just wanting the best for her! :) |
I would consult with your vet. It may be too soon to skip meals. It can't hurt to ask. Is this something you could just call the vet for? |
Hypoglycemia on people and dogs is often a sign of an issue, and not a life long condition, however it can be. It is usually managed with small more frequent meals, or a more serious coarse of action based on the cause. |
