Trifexis and Abby Rose I am new to YorkieTalk and so appreciate this forum! Abby Rose is 11 months old, and last week got her Trifexis treatment. She vomited the first pill, Comfortis, on Wednesday, on Thursday we gave her the Trifexis pill the vet gave to us. By that afternoon, her skin was all red and she started to develop welts and was itching like crazy. She also got diarrhea. We brought her to the vet who gave her prednisone which helped with the itching, but she seemed to get a reaction to that. The diarrhea continued, and became bloody at times. She was still eating, playing etc., but sleeping a lot more than usual. Long story short, after researching Trifex online, I will never give her that again!!!! Just got back from our vet who drew blood to take tests that will be paid for by the drug company.....she is taking immodium now which seems to be helping her tummy, but she is not 100% yet. I am considering giving her seasonal heartworm protection instead of monthly. These meds are very strong....just wanted to share in case someone else has had these problems. Tx! |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am very sorry to hear that the Trifexus made Abby Rose sick, and I hope she recovers completely quickly. I thought Trifexus has Comfortis in it -- or one of the flea & tick oral preventatives. For others reading, definitely check with your vet because there would be no need for doubling up. I hate giving this stuff to my pups too, but the risk of heartworm is even scarier. You and I both live in the very high risk zone. I decided to give my guys the preventatives year round because the weather is so unreliable and there are really only 2 - 3 months out of the year that we could maybe skip. Then we would have to have blood tests done before re-starting. We used Interceptor before production was halted, and we are hoping for it to return soon. In the meantime, we are using Heartguard Plus with no problems. I would try that with Abby Rose. Best wishes. |

Thx for your answers! She threw up the Comfortis right away which is why the vet thought it was ok to give her the trifexis the next day. Perhaps there was some in her system anyway and it was all too much. Just wondering if anyone else had trouble with trifexis. Tx again for your responses! Pix will come soon! |
A side effect of trifexis is vomiting which according to the discussion I had with my vet results from the comfortis. I elected not to use this product. Your dog already had an inital reaction to comfortis and I really don't understand why your vet would prescribe another product with the same ingrediant. |
I have been using Trifexis for 11 doses in 2 dogs without any problems, but it can cause vomiting if you don't give it on a full stomach. I am very careful to do it immediately after their breakfast, so I haven't had a problem. That being said: 1. Just because my dogs don't have a reaction, doesn't mean yours won't. It sounds like yours may have an issue that goes beyond digestive tolerance. 2. Even though I've been using it without incidence, I'm still not comfortable with it. I only started using it because Sentinel wasn't available. 3. When my pups go in for their annual next month, I'm considering going to Heartguard/Iverheart and not treating for fleas. I've never seen a flea on them, I think I can go a few months without flea treatment until Sentinel becomes available again. Re Sentinel and Interceptor: Novartis are currently making trial runs to iron out the kinks in their production process / quality control and are expected to be able to start supplying vets in three or four months from now. Not that we can count on that exact time frame, but they are slowly making progress. |
I'm very sorry. Trifexis and Comfortis are highly questionable (jmho). They are newer and already have a ton of reported side effects. I personally wouldn't touch either for my dogs (nor would my vet for her dogs). If the goal when giving Trifexis was to avoid the Comfortis reaction I'm not sure what your vet was doing... I'd go to Heartgard and see what you get (Program for fleas). Heartgard Plus is fine. They may still make the regular Heartgard which would have less chemicals. |
Yorkiemoms.... Tx again for your answers. The vet did not give AbbyRose the Trifexis to avoid the Comfortis reaction. They gave us the Comfortis in error, and since she vomited it up quickly, the vet said there was none of it in her system, and gave the Trifexis as the CORRECT medication the next day. Fleas are really bad down here esp. in the summer months. I am not going to medicate her for fleas until I see some....I have 3 precious kitties also, and they are always the first ones to let me know there are fleas out there! I am heartwarmed by your answers, and again, I wanted people to know that (I think) Trifexis is a strong med that may not be good for all our doggies..... just in case someone else sees symptoms in their furbaby after using it. |
