New Yorkie Mom - need help with hair loss My yorkie is losing hair on her hind legs. It coincided with her first heat around Thanksgiving. Since there were no signs of skin issues/irritations and she wasn't scratching, biting or licking. I waited to see the vet. There are no signs of fleas, no flea dirt and nothing in the flea comb. I check her daily. We visited 3 weeks ago and he could not find any issues with her skin. Even used a black light to check for fungus on her skin. He feels that since it coincided with her heat cycle it must be hormone related. He suggested giving her 3mg of Melatonin twice a day. Has anyone else had any experience or success with this treatment? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. |
Interesting on the hormone theory, hmmm....I hope someone else who has intact females will see this and comment. So, she must be less than a year old then? It seems odd to lose hair that young as a result of hormones. Are there any other odd/random symptoms that she has? Did the comment suspect hypothyroid at all? (again, weird w/ her age, but still...) Yes, Melatonin is given to some dogs who have certain types of hair loss. My Wylie takes the same dose as you were given due to his hair loss from Atypical Cushings. |
I am interested in the outcome of this. My mom got her first Yorkie in 1972. Iago lost almost all of his hair by the time he was 2. She took him to every vet in Nashville and no one could figure out what caused it. It's been a mystery for 40 years now. |
