The Special Needs is for Senior or overweight pups. It is not grain free but I think it only has a couple of grains and they are the grains that are the easiest to digest... You could just go with a Grain Inclusive one and take just a teeny bit of kibble out and replace it with a few Green Beans. Green Beans are great for overweight pups... my Vet said that basically, they burn them off by the time they finish chewing them. :) I have even heard of some people putting their overweight pups on a greenbean diet. |
Rox loves green beans. Also carrots and broccoli. I give her vegetables instead of treats but nothing seems to help. She is so active. I think maybe I will try the grain free one and focus more on the feet problem since her weight seems to be out of my control. |

How old is she and how much does she weigh? Can you not feel her ribs?? She looks soooooo Cute in your Avatar!! Is that her?! |
Unfortunately, I don't live in Arlington anymore :( We are in South Central Kentucky now. That is little Rox in the picture. She will be 7 in May and weighs 8-8.5 pounds. Her ribs are easily felt and she is very active but the vets always tell me she is overweight. My friend was looking to adopt a yorkie from a rescue and I noticed that a lot of them were 8-9 pounds but they keep telling me she needs to be less than 7. She walks at least 2 miles a day (not including running around the yard, house, up and down the stairs) and we feed her maybe a total of .5 cup of food a day (split in 2 servings). Hardly ever any treats (and only holistic) but she just cannot lose weight. |

They have even ordered me 1lb bags so Riley could try them out first!! |

If her ribs are easily felt, then she is fine. I don't know why the Vet would say that....?? It is when you can't feel their ribs and you have to dig in a little, when they are overweight. They may be telling you that only because AKC Stardard for a Yorkie is 4 - 7 pounds... But there are many more that are bigger as well as smaller. My Riley is about 8 - 9 pounds, now at almost 3-years old. He'll be 3 in May. His Daddy was 4lbs and His Mommy was 8lbs. She Is Too Cute For Words!!!! |
Here is a good way to evaluate: How to Evaluate Your Dog's Weight - For Dummies It says: If you can feel no evidence that your dog possesses a rib cage, she’s probably overweight. If you can feel the ribs but they have a slight padding, like a light blanket over them, then your dog may be just right. |
Thanks! Of course I think she's the cutest dog in the whole world... but I'm a little bias. http://i50.tinypic.com/8x7hty.jpg That's Roxie after we tried to get her picture taken with Santa and he didn't show up :( I feel so much better about her weight now that I've been on this forum. I think I am just going to order the food online. I saw that sears carries it... random but I think I trust it more than a 1800dogsrus.com type thing. |

I would think that Sears should be just fine. I have ordered from www.chewy.com and they were Great! I ordered on a Sunday and it was at my door that Tuesday. Only thing is I think they only sell the big 12lb bags. I only ordered there, once. I saw that www.petfoodstation.com also has it in smaller bags. Not sure how they are to order from, but I think if I had to order online I might give them a try. I just checked out your Album and she doesn't look the least bit overweight in Any of those pics. :) She reminds me a LOT of my Riley!! :) |
Thank! Ordering online actually works out well for me because Petsmart is 30 minutes away and that's where I get her food now. I have a bag of her ultra left so I think I'll use that up and then switch when I run out. I got on the forum to read about her teeth and found this thread by accident but I'm glad I did. Sometimes she bites her feet so hard it looks like she's going to rip the little pads off |
Thanks for the Canine Caviar suggestion. Buster has been chewing at his feet and sides recently. I just bought the CC Duck kibble and hopefully his scratching will ease. |

If you can feel ribs easily, she shouldn't be overweight. You also seem to be feeding the proper amount, and the fact that she's getting 2 miles a day + seems to me like she should be fine. It's hard to tell though from your pictures... I mean, this one: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...ictureid=51142 she does look a tad overweight, but it could just be the angle or the hair. Do you have an aerial view of her? May be best to take in the bath when she's wetted down. For example, here's Jackson from above (16lbs): I always gauge his weight by looking at him from above.... also you should be able to see/feel a 'tuck' under the waist. With that said, all Yorkies are different, and it may just be her figure.... but |
