angel's eyes fo tearstaining Just adopted a 4 and 5 year old. Both have bad tearstaining. I clean daily with minimal results. A groomer recommended Angel's Eyes. The reviews I've seen are mixed. I've already changed their diet to a dye free Blue Buffalo, give them filtered water and have switched to white ceramic bowls without any improvement. |
Don't use it. Giving antibiotic unnecessicarily is haphazard. Tear and beef stain removal recipe: |
1tsp each Milk of magnesia Corn starch 3% hydrogen peroxide mix into a paste and apply overnight whipe off in morning, it may take several treatments. (Recipe from the Beers). hydrogen peroxide can burn in the eye so be careful. Also please ensure your dog does not have a yeast or bacterial infection prior to this home remedy. Fir yeast I reccomend dog safe yogurt in diet and raw cold pressed coconut oil topically. For bacterial infection antibiotics from vet, and coconut oil topically. Then use the above recipe. As for diet, try grain free foods with no allergens, also stainless steel bowls-we use a water bottle for the dogs here not a bowl due to bacterial and yeast issues caused by wet beards from water bowl drinking |
What are other options? |

Sorry, total post didn't go through. I've considered water bottles but with my dogs and my fosters(including a saint) not feasible. We have an appointment friday with vet do will yry to het cultutrd done. Getting to know him well. |
Culture is a great idea! Many vets will just look and diagnosis because these are so common. Hope it helps can't wait to see pics if your babies!!! |
I used angel eyes for about 3 months and it took care of the tear stains |
Will also try on my maltese. I have 3 but only 2 have issues with eyes, but since they're all from the same litter it may be a genetic predisposition. Tried to upload photos but Imudt be doing something wrong. It says my attachment is to large. I do much better with dogs than computers. If you want to ser photos check the gallery.Sorry. |

Just looked up the ingredients for Angel's Eyes Natural, what i found at the local Petco. There is no mention of any antibiotics(Ibelieve it is tetracycline). I called the company but they're closed until tomorrow(est). Is there a difference or just deceptive labeling? I was under the impression that it couldn't be sold in california. |
I heard that it had Tetracycline which is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body? But I could be wrong. |
Some dogs are prone to food allergies, yeast based ear infections, or even teething problems. This causes an inflammatory reaction, which in turn upsets a dog's PH balance. The result is a breeding ground for red yeast. Basically, the bad bacteria in the gut kills off the good bacteria. This happens in humans too. The standard vet cure is a low dose 10 day cycle of tetracycline, which again balances the GI tract. The active ingredient in Angel Eyes is Tylosin (similar in structure to Erythromycin). It is a Macrolide Antibiotic, meaning it does not kill bacteria but controls it's growth. It is prescribed to treat gastrointestinal tract infections. Even though the amount of Tylosin in Angel Eyes is small, I would never use it long term. It is meant to use short term to restore the balance between the good and bad bacterias. When that happens, the red yeast dies, and no more tear stains. Some dogs with yeast smell terrible and they often itch like crazy. I can understand someone may not want to use an over the counter product like Angel Eyes. Make sure your dog's kibble is both high quality, and most important, grain free. Try Gerber Baby Water. One gallon is $1. at Walmart, and can be found in the grocery department. It's in the isle with jugs of water. Use a stainless steel bowl for the water. You should notice an improvement very quickly. I hope this helps. __________________ |
I finally found a link for angels eyes natural. It doesn't contain the tylosin. I'm still going to have their eyes cultured. They are so small, but healthy, that I don't want to take chances. Getting my wonderful babies for nothing is a gift I don't want to take for granted. Thanks for the advise about other treatments. |
I learn something almost every day here..........THANKS! |
I don't know which, a girl at the pet store mentioned she doesn't like selling it and I asked my vet who advised against it stating it contains antibiitic ingrdients and the over use of them despite being listed as dietary aids and not rx antibiotics could lead to abtibiotic resisrance, especially in small animals as the dosages are not perscise. |
Used the paste mixture . Already an improvement with only 3 treatments. Still waiting on the cultute results. |
Just got back from the vet and my Izzy does have an eye infection. She received 2 IM antibiotics and 1 IM steriod for inflamation. She'll be in oral antibiotics and eye drop antibiotics for at leadt 2 weeks. Then she'll need a tear duct irrigation because her tear ducts are totally blocked, which means she also needs dtops to keep her eyes moistand prevent corneal abrasions. No Angels Eyes! |
