Yorkies & morphine? My puppy suffered a fall at the groomers and the vet just gave us morphine for her. It's a seringe to inject (no needle) into her gum & cheek area every 12 hours. She's so small, I'm just nervous about her being on it. Anyone else ever have to put a yorkie on pain killers? |
I had to have Clyde on pain killers once. I was really nervous at first ... but after the pain killers took affect he just seemed really... happy. He was a lot more relaxed & just had a goofiness about him afterward. I also once had to give a foster puppy pain killers. The foster puppy ... when the puppy was on pain killers he would act really goofy and playful (since he wasn't in pain anymore). Generally all the pain killers that I have used have had my pets act goofy, but nothing to worry about. Obviously the affect wouldn't be the same for every dog... also morphine is a much stronger drug and probably would really sedate her ... but if it would relieve her from the discomfort she is probably feeling I would go ahead and maybe give it a try with an extremely small dose or something. Has she been on morphine before? |
Thanks for your info! She has never been on it before. I'm going to give it to her tonight and see how she does. I guess I'm just nervous she'll be overly lethargic. |
I think what your vet probably gave you is Torbutrol, an opiate like morphine. I have given it many times and never had a problem with it. Just follow your vet's directions. If she seems too groggy from it, call the vet. |
I think I'm going to reduce the dose... They said give it as needed and I think she's not feeling well on it. She just sits in her cage or sleeps. She never goes in her cage on her own so my guess is that she isn't feeling well on it or is scared. Poor little girl, she's only 3.5lbs and 6 months. She's so much happier & more lively when it wears off. |
