Vomitting After Anesthesia?
 

Is it normal? Lily had her dental today. I picked her up around 4pm. She was ready at 3 pm. I fed her a little bit of kibble around 4:30-5pm. She just barfed in the car in front of the house about 8:30 (very watery, she drank a lot of water), and then again later when we got in the house (9:00).

Kibble is fish so you can imagine how bad it smells!
Is this normal? She's acting normal, barking, whining, wanting to be picked up, etc. She was still very sleepy on the car ride home from the vet.

I just gave her a few bits of kibble. She wants to eat. I just googled and it said to give mostly water, but not too much food. Is this correct?

I remember our vet saying that ZoE might vomit after her spay/anesthesia (but she didn't).

And I know my kids did after anesthesia, when they had their wisdom teeth out, so I'd assume it's a common side effect.

Normal as long as it doesn't keep happening.

Water first (don't let her gorge on a ton at once), then after that stays down offer part of a meal.

She did drink quite a bit of water. She hadn't had any all day and she was crying in the cage at the vet, so I'm sure she was really thirsty. She usually drinks a lot of water also.

She wants more food, but I'm reading around and everywhere is saying to withhold a full meal until about 24 hours after the procedure. She still wants kibble though. I just gave her about 5 pcs. I guess I should stop. She is acting normal though. She's hiding right now, that's normal for her.

Yup, too much water at once. Small amounts regulated by you so she can't stand there and drink a ton. While she may feel thirsty she shouldn't be dehydrated after having an IV.

Ok thanks Crystal. She seems to want to drink more. She just went to the bowl and I took it up. She hasn't puked again since I gave her the five new kibble.

My vet said Tibbe could be nauseated and even vomit 24 - 48 hours after his recent anesthesia on Dec. 6, a Thursday, with his dental. He drank a lot of water, too, so finally I had to take it up and just syringe him 1 - 2 ml. every hour. I only let him eat a few kibbles every hour. He got sick but he didn't vomit but he did look green as he stood with his head sticking out and low, wouldn't move around and looked miserable. I put him in his crate and put it by me to quieten him and after he slept, he felt better so we went back to the little bits of water. He wasn't really hungry again until almost morning so I let him eat some more. The next day he was pretty normal. He acted sick again that Saturday but again he didn't vomit. He's really only actually vomited two or three times in his life. The third time was I think his 4th day after anesthesia, a Sunday, he vomited up mostly fluid. That's when I took him in and the vet said he probably had a tracheal inflammation from his 'tubing and put him on antibiotics, Cerenia, Famotidine. He was iffy for a week after. Had gassy episodes, anorexia for a couple of days, drank a fair bit of water, lethargy. Slowly he got better. Finally now, he's all over it all and back to himself.

Glad Tibbe is doing better! Lily wants to eat and drink! But she barfed (so far only those two times) so I'm afraid to give her more. I don't remember my other fosters having much reaction to the anesthetic much.

After any anesthesia, I hold food of any kind for about 6 hours, then I give baby food...chicken or lamb.....just half a jar to start, then the other half in 4 hours...if they keep that down, I will up it to 3/4 jar after another 4 hours, and if tolerated, a whole jar in another 6 hours. As far as water goes, I give Pedialyte about 1 oz....if they keep it down, after an hour of so, another 1 oz of Pedialyte....that is all I give in amount at one time, for the first 12 hours...then I will increase it up to 2 oz...it seems to me they keep Pedialyte down better than plain water....I think it may be because it is more pH balanced with normal body fluids than just tap or distilled water., and it quenches their thirst better.

Momo just had his dental cleaning yesterday & he had 3 teeth extractions, so he can only have soft food for 3 days. They also told me to give him little bit of water at a time so it doesn't irritate his throat. Ice is better.

They gave me a 'Please call our office if there is any' list & vomiting is one of them. I know it's too late to call the vet now, so I would hold off on any solid food & call the vet 1st thing in the am. But she's eager to eat, so I think she's ok, just a little queasy from the anesthesia. How about some softened kibble so it's easier to digest?

Your poor girl vomitting. Is she doing better this morning?

For us, Buster just had his teeth cleaned too, and the vet said just a little bit of water until the morning. (Even though he wanted a whole bowl full, I think.) Plus I could give him a little bit of scrambled egg or a little bit of cottage cheese.

Unlike your girl, Buster did not vomit. Thinking about you both and will check in later to see if things are improved.

She barfed again last night in bed. :( so she was banished to sleep on the bed on the floor. But she still was jumping up and down like a logo stick trying to get up in our bed. I\'m going to try to feed her a bit of kibble soon.

I\'m sorry she\'s still nauseous from the anesthesia. It definitely can do it. I\'ve even thrown up after surgery before. It\'s gotta be like that with their tiny systems, too.

I\'m glad she\'s coming along though slowly it sounds like. Hopefully, today will be a better day for Lily!!!
