Fish Oil and weight gain? Has anyone experienced any weight gain in their Yorkie when giving fish oil daily on their food over a period of a few months? Is it possible that fish oil can cause weight gain? I've read online that it can. |
i do not know the answer to your question as i have never given fish oil supplements to my dogs but i did find some info online....:) Fish Oil for Dogs & Allergies | eHow.com |
Thanks for the link! I guess the pros and cons both need to be considered. It has helped the itching. Not real sure if it has caused the weight gain. |

yeah, i guess that is all you can do. i am glad it has helped with the itch though... |
I don't know much about fish oil, but I give my puppy flax seed oil. She gets this supplement daily. It helps to improve their immune system, insures a healthy heart and great for skin & coat or allergies. It doesn't say anything about weight gain, so I'm guessing it does not have that effect. Fish oil seems to have that side effect. My vet recommended it because Teeka has been doing a lot of scratching. She has only been on it a few days so we'll see how it works for the itch! If nothing else it is a good supplement for the whole body. I hope this helps. :) |
Yes, it is a fat source. Fat is 9 cal/ gram. Usually calories per capsule are listed on the bottle. It is probably somewhere between 10 and 30. Considering an average yorkie needs around 180 cal/day, it is significant. |

She has been on it only a few days and so far no loose stools. She hasn't been scratching as much but it might be the combination of oatmeal bath w/chamomile and the furnace not running as much because it warmed up for the last week. I was told it would take a few weeks to see any difference in her skin. I will keep you posted, though! |

wouldn't the flaxseed oil have the same calories? If you give the same amount? |

I, too would be interested to find out the calorie content. In humans it supposedly helps with weight loss! |
Zhoie has been on fish oil for a few months now and I can say her diet has not changed, but she has put on a few ounces. She eats morning & evening same amount of food serving, no treats...nothing else and still the weight gain:rolleyes: I can only assumes its the fish oil at this point. Such ashame because her coat is so shiny and no tangles...go figure. |
Yeah...I trimmed back on Toki's kibble a smidge to compensate for the salmon oil. I think 1 pump of Grizzly Salmon oil has about 15 calories or so. Totally worth it for the improvement in skin dryness and coat health though! I might start leaving out the oil when I rotate with a higher fat kibble or a formula with more omegas though |
The addition of any fat or other calories beyond what the dog needs daily will cause weight gain. I personally feed fish oils, but my dogs are fed home cooked diets where these calories are accounted for in the daily allowance. I would cut it back to every other day and weigh her and see if that does the trick. I'm not a fan of flax for dogs and it can be allergenic. |
