Has anyone had to have their Yorkies' ear canal removed? Bubbles is having this surgery tomorrow afternoon. I've Googled and read up as much as I can about this, but I'd love to hear any experiences from members of this board who have always been so trustworthy. Thanks in advance. |
I have never heard of this. May I ask why it's being done? |

They planned to do a biopsy, but when they noticed how deep this "growth" goes into her ear canal, the recommendation was to just remove the ear canal to be on the safe side. I haven't gotten a second opinion just due to the fact that we've done to this vet with Bubbles for over 12 years and have come to trust him. However it does seem extreme to me...but mainly, I'm concerned about what I can expect after the surgery from anyone who may have experienced this with their dog. Here's a link to some information about it, but be warned there's a couple of pics included that are not for the squeamish: Total Ear Canal Ablation |
I have no experience with ear canal, but I do with cancer. My thoughts, when it doubt take it out. Hugs I know how stressful this is. |
No experience or advise but I will keep your baby in my prayers. |
I can tell you that IF this were one of my pups, there is NO way that my regular vet would be doing this surgery. You need to see a specialist for a 2nd opinion. |

I have no experience with this...have never heard of this....dont know anyone that has ever had this done. Because of how extensive this surgery is, and what it possibly could involve, I would be using a specialist to do this surgery. There are things like equilibrium with the inner ear that seem to me could be disrupted, possibly causing a permanent off balance situation......in my opinion, this requires a specialist. And I would go for a biopsy before I would let anyone go that deeply into my dogs head, unless it was absolutely necessary. I have a great relationship with my vet, and I think she may be the first to suggest at least a second opinion with a specialist, and would certainly have no qualms with me having a specialist do the procedure. |

If it were me...I would want a second opinion and a biopsy before I let any vet perform this operation on my dog. |
My regular vet is NOT the one doing the surgery. There is a specialist on staff who is doing the surgery ... I suppose I should have mentioned that (sorry). The specialist has already seen her last week and is of the same opinion. When I read "second opinion" I was thinking it meant taking her to another clinic or hospital, not just a specialist at the same place. Thanks to all for the prayers...will update when I get news. |
Thanks to all for the well wishes and prayers. The surgery went well; she's staying at the hospital tonight (and maybe tomorrow too). We'll probably get to visit tomorrow morning. |
I just wanted to say I am glad she did well in surgery and I wish her a speedy recovery:) |
