Snack Time! And other puppy q's... Was wondering how old is it okay to give your pup snacks/treats when they do something right. Mine is so amazing so far without it...but want to start training him to come when I ask him to...sit, stay, etc. What is the ideal age? Also...he will be 11 weeks soon (wow, time flies! lol)...and he sleeps a lot...like a cat. Is this okay? And how long do you all typically play with your pups to tucker them out? Thank you! :) -Sandra.* & Lou'e.* |

Yes on the treats! You can give doggy treats or little bites of carrots, green beans.. Make sure they are tiny bites so he doesn't choke!! if you go in the "health and diet" section somewhere is a thread on fruits and veggies that are safe! Each puppy is different- He sounds like a perfect healthy puppy! when Pnut was a puppy we would play, after a while he would walk away and go take a nap!! LOL |

I started right when I got my pup carmello at 10 weeks, but I would use his dry kibble instead of treats. I think I started using treats when he started getting a little bigger, and i would cut them into smaller pieces so he wouldnt gobble them down! :) |

You can start treats now! :) I would definitely suggest using fruits/veggies and treats made in the USA or Canada. There are a lot of recalls on treats right now, so you don't want to chance your puppy getting sick. I know a lot of people use Cheerios because they are small and not fatty. Good luck! |

Now with the Cheerios... is that the standard or the honey nut version? Does it matter if you give the honey ones? I know they have almonds.... |

Your pup is still young and should not have a lot of treats. Make sure he is eating all of his food and that the treats do not interfere with his appetite for his puppy food. Dehydrated meat treats are good for dogs. You can break off a small amount to give as a reward. Most of the stuff they sell in department stores and pet stores are garbage so your better off giving something you have at home. Take it easy on the fruits and veggies with a young puppy. They can cause diarrhea if they eat too much of those. |

You can just use his kibble as treats. I like to only use treats as rewards. Sit, stay, good poop, etc. |

they do sleep alot as puppies, and chester eats buddy biscuits, soft and hard and they are small, made in usa. They will sleep when they need it |

When Riley was about 12 weeks old I would boil chicken breasts and cut them up real tiny. Those were his training treats... or pieces of green beans or carrots... Riley slept like a Cat!! He would play hard for maybe 30 - 45 minutes and then would major CRASH for a couple of hours. |

I used Cheerio's, plain old Cheerio's nothing to fancy. Sophie Kate loved them and still does, she knows the word Cheerio. |

Thanks everyone for the tips! Cheerios, boiled chicken breasts, carrots, I can do that! :) I will use his kibble for now...and then go from there. Little Lou'e will be 11 weeks tomorrow! WOW time flies!! |

Mine is a BRAT and will not eat treats even, in puppy school he would take them from the instructor then walk over to another puppy and give it to them lol but we used carrots, apples and extra special reward of cheese all in tiny cubes as a puppy. |

I have a container of Honey nut Cheerios by the back door that are for Abby's potty treats ONLY! The sweet ones were the high reward that finally worked- we give the dogs regular cheerios for sit ,stay etc... |
