Puppy needs his teeth out? Have any of you been told that your Yorkie need to have teeth out as a puppy by 6 months if not out on their own? The vet said Yorkies are notorious for not losing puppy teeth on their own. Any opinions? |
When Zachary was neutered at 6 months, they had to pull 8 teeth. It is normal. Louise and Zachary |
Retained baby teeth are common in Yorkies and are usually removed when you put them under for their spay/neuter at around 8 months of age...by 8 months, all the adult teeth are in, and you can get any baby teeth that remain, pulled. I personally do not like to advocate spaying/nutering before 8 months of age....evidence-based research shows there are permanent problems caused by this push to spay/neuter at such early ages. There seems to be something behind that "old wives tale" to let females go thru one heat cycle.....and you want to allow growth plates to be completed and optimal. |
Callie got spayed around 9 months and had 3 teeth pulled I think. It is normal for yorkies to have to get teeth pulled when they get fixed that's why a lot of people like to wait until at least 6 months if not a little older so they can get the baby teeth pulled at the same time. Leaving the baby teeth can cause food to get caught between the teeth if the adult teeth have already grown in and it can mess up the alignment of there teeth. |
It is best to get retained puppy teeth pulled out during the spay/neuter procedure. My female (almost 3 years) had a puppy tooth fall out during her dental a couple weeks ago. I don't know why it wasn't pulled during her spay, but it's gone now. |
Oh yes....Zhoie had 13 teeth removed with her spay. My girl may just have the record for the most retained....LOL. |
Yup, Brody had to get his retained puppy teeth removed during his neuter! |
chester had 2 teeth pulled when he was neutered |
Tufty and Teegy were 8 and 9 months old when I got them snipped and they removed excess teeth, Teegy 4 Tufty 5, during the surgery |

Tink was spayed when she was 6 months old and they needed to pull two puppy teeth. She came through fine....you'd never know she had teeth pulled when she got home! LOL |
