dry skin and itchy Hey all I have a 12lbs yorkie that found me. I have no idea of her past. She has dry skin like no other she sits and scratches till she is bleeding. I have asked the vet and no luck so far so I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. We have used oatmeal soap, Aloe soap, baby soap on her and nothing is helping. We keep her hair cut short because she scratches so much she ends up matted. She gets a bath every week. Help i just don't know what else to do she is so sweet she dosnt need this. Hello and welcome to YT. If i were you i would try a different vet because she can be itchy for several reasons as in allergies, food, yeast infection, mites, but only a vet can determine what is really going on. Good luck and please keep us posted. |
I think that kind of itching comes from inside. I would try the best grainfree, enzyme and probiotic added, no chicken food (fish based is good) you can buy (they eat less of the good stuff so it doesn't always cost more!)and give her probiotics sprinkled on her food if she has a yucky (yeast) smell to her skin and ears when she scratches. A few fresh green beans as her snacks- no processed dog snacks. Give it 30 days to get her system back on track! Shampoo type is not so important as rinsing! |
If you and your vet have completely ruled out any type of allergies, you might consider adding some salmon oil or coconut oil to the diet to help with the skin and coat dryness. I took Toki in for something similar (she wasn't itching and scratching herself bloody though... she just had dry flaky, skin on her paws). Our vet thought it might be related to the weather changing (cold and dryish now) and suggested increasing the amount of salmon oil that we gave her...we used to give her 1/2 pump of Grizzly Salmon Oil with breakfast but we upped it to a full 1 pump and that really seems to have helped us out. Just a suggestion of something to discuss with your vet :) |
I agree with the above suggestions, I would also think about adding coconut oil to her food. You could also rub the coconut oil onto the itchy areas. I would also ask vet about giving some benadryl until you can discover what is making her itch. I have a yorkie like this, we are on a duck protein food that seems to be working well for us. |

Coconut oil is very good, but I really like fish oil. I started my boys on Animal Essentials Fish Oil PLUS a few months ago, which I sell, and it made a dramatic difference in their coats. What brand shampoo do you use? Try a conditioner too. If these things don't work, her skin issues may run deeper and another vet may be required. |

What kind of food are you feeding her? It usually is the diet. Try natural/holistic grain free foods.. |
I have used Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet in Riley's kibble in the mornings. A lot of different places sell it online. I used to get it at Wholefoods and recently got it at a pet boutique near my place. They have it in liquid form as well as gel pills that you cut open and squirt on. NORDIC NATURALS :: NORDIC PET :: PROFESSIONAL I have also rubbed Nutiva organic coconut oil on his tummy... or put a few drops in his food. I got it at the GNC.
