Age to neuter and remove baby teeth? Asking for your thoughts and opinions. I have two adorable pups that will be 6 months in two weeks. The vet has encouraged us to have them neutered sooner than later (as they're brothers and we're occasionally seeing some unwanted behaviors). However, I've noticed one of my boys has two rows of upper teeth. I've been keeping an eye on it, hoping he'd start losing them (we've found a few of his brothers), but alas, nothing has changed in the last month. From the info. I've found online, it sounds like it could take him longer to lose them, but also I need to be careful not to wait too long (for fear of decay or infection). I had already scheduled the neutering for the week of Thanksgiving (as I'll be off work for that week). I know Bear may need to have some of his teeth taken out at the same time (which I prefer vs. the idea of having to have him put under again). Would it be better for me to wait and give him more time or do it now? We love our boys so much and I want to make sure I'm doing what's best for him and not put him at risk. Thanks for your help. |
Hi, you want to wait long enough so that they have some adult teeth, but not too long so that marking is firmly established. I think around 7 months is fine for small breeds. Yorkies usually don't lose all their teeth on their own, so having the baby teeth removed at the same time as neutering is a good idea. I also had a microchip inserted at the same time, they are only about $30.00, so it's a great value, and you don't have to worry about it hurting them. |
My Bella was pushing 8 mos when I had her fixed. They took baby teeth at the same time. |
I would say 6 months. I agree to have the microchip done at the same time. |
Thanks everyone - I appreciate it. Very ironic, as we were on the floor playing tug o war w/ a sock and one of his teeth came out yesterday :) Couldn't believe it! Will keep playing w/ him and see if we can work anymore loose :) Think we'll just keep our appt in a few weeks. |
I had both of my girls spayed at 7 months. Ziva had 7 teeth removed and Abby only the two doubled up canines. Ziva played tugging games with Abby more- we used knotted fleece strips (sometimes dampening and freezing them first)the fleece is still their favorite toy.! The teeth removal was no big deal, the gums immediately moved back around the permanent teeth- no rawness at all, Ziva was more comfotable eating afterwards, the double teeth really bothered her. |

At about 6-7 months Mickey got neutered, chipped and baby teeth removed all at the same time. |
