Dental cleaning & extractions periodontal disease - Cost
 

Hi,

My yorkie's teeth has some bad tartar so after 5 yrs I took him in today for an evaluation and estimate and what I got shocked the heck out of me. They said he has some periodontal disease and that at least 3 teeth has to go. So with the grand total which was this huge list of stuff like x-rays, pain meds, and what ever else there was just too many for me to list came to $1200.

Can someone with similar dental issues tell me is this reasonable or am I getting taken to the cleaners? And better if you know of a decent vet in san diego county that does good dental work that isn't so crazy please PM me. I don't even want to disclose this vet's because they have a near perfect rating on Yelp and they are very nice so I don't want to give them a bad rep or anything.

I took Jackson to a dental specialist (ALL they do is dental stuff in this office) and he had a cleaning, one tooth pulled, but he also had a vital pulpotomy on his canine tooth (almost like... a root canal, or a filling for us). So it was a somewhat 'big' procedure. It cost me almost $1400. That didn't even include bloodwork, which he had done at his regular vets. But it was x-rays and pain meds.

For a regular dental, most are under $400 from my experience. However, it all depends on area. I'd call around and get estimates IMO.

Just had a dental cleaning on my almost 15 yr old yorkie girl. With the exam, blood work, and all that goes with it, no extractions, came to $939 at a very reputible Emergency & Surgery Hosp. who can deal in high risk cases. My yorkie is only 3.6 lbs. she's doing well on Clavamox antibiotic, eating well, drinking well and peeing a lot. Going back for urinalysis on tues to see why her kidney values were mildly increased.

My aunt suggested I just take him to another vet, I know ours is expensive but she is a small breed spe ialist and taking every precaution.

Better safe than sorry for me here. Does stink there's no doggy dental insurance though.

For the area you live in, it sounds reasonable.

I know with one of my late ones it was about $900.00, but she had a lot of teeth pulled.

But with just a normal cleaning, blood work and no teeth pulling and the antibiotics after my cost is about $300.00.

Does normal teeth maitenance avoid this? Like brush daily/weekly...

That is high unless that was the high end of the estimate and they gave themselves room in case more than three had to be pulled.

My girl had nine teeth pulled fir $600. ..but it isn't as easy as just comparing prices. A lot depends on which teeth need to come out. teeth with multiple roots are more difficult to pull. If they are doing pedicle flaps or anything, that adds to the cost.

Most importantly they need to be using a safe anesthetic protocol, multiple people in the room, thorough monitoring, dental xray (most vets don't have this and they should not be pulling teeth without it), pain meds/antibiotics,bloodwork, etc.

Wow I am taking Pixie in Wednesday for her dental. I know she will need some pulled. I thought last time I had her's done 2 years ago it was under 400.00. I guess I'll find out next week.

Yes it helps tremendously. Sugar had a dental right after she came to live with me. She had stage 3 periodontal disease and bone loss. 2 years ago she had another dental and lost 4 teeth.

I have been using a Sonicare toothbrush on her almost daily for the past 2 years.

Tuesday, Sugar had another dental. Her bone loss has slowed, had very minimal tartar and gum bleeding. Sonicare and a consistant healthy mouth care routine has helped to save her remaining teeth.

Thats it Lisa, I am going to buy a SonicCare in a little while, you've sold me! I've seen reference to it so many times and your advice always seems so on target...you should be a commercial for them! Now...your tips on how to introduce it to my pups??????:eek:

I guess my best advice, before your purchase, is to know your pups and their tolerance level and their willingness to please you. Sugar has never once fought me on it ~ even on day ONE of introduction to the brush.

Curri has been a little tougher nut to crack :rolleyes:I started with the brush OFF with her (she was 6 months old and never been exposed to even a manual brush as far as I know) then I smooshed cooked chicken into the brush and turned it onto the "sensitive" setting. 6 months later I can briefly brush the outer surfaces of her teeth (I might get 45 seconds total) but 45 seconds with sonic is equal to several minutes with a manual brush.

Here at least a normal dental is 325the (for the safer anethiasia preblood work included).

Eveb with dogs with pre existing dental issues normal maintance can stop further issues, if there is no ptecioys issues and you get a pup debtal care should be the foremost grooming, basic care, health priority.

Hair can be cut and grow back, over grown nails can be treated without health risk.
Dental health whilr under grooming affects over all health literally it is life saving not to mention the cost is a lot.

And I paid $825.00 for all this, plus post op recovery room fee with one tech monitoring baby until completely awake.

Wow is all i can say to some of the price's that these vets are charging people. Just had a dental this past Tuesday cost was a little over $200 for

February is dental month, will have others done then.

Yea ours was like $200,- $300 they pulled a whopping 5 teeth. Included recovery and meds. Here Feb is dental month as well and you save a good bit by booking in that month. I know Belle is going back this coming Feb because her breath once again has gotten rotten. She just had this done last Feb.

For where you live, that's about right. It costs us a lot too where we live. I take the approach though, that if a tooth is questionable, I'd rather it be taken out to help the rest of our dog's mouth than keep it in. They don't seem to miss their teeth - I have 2 dogs that had several teeth pulled but you wouldn't know it by the way they eat. With each extraction, the cost will go up. For us, October is the dental month and we can get 10% off which helps, but you're still looking at a good bit over $1,000. Good luck.

So, in addition to regular teeth maintenance. what should one do to lower the chances of such a progressive dental issue?

What is Sonicare? I'm not sure if it's a product or a type of electric toothbrush.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have pet insurance? I'm not sure if they cover this stuff though.

I have pet insurance on my 3. But I don't have the routine part where they usually cover some part of their vaccinations or dental.

We usually buy 1 or 2 and then everyone has their own head attachment- saves $tax when you have 8 in the house.

Lacey went back for her check up/ labs and found that she is in the early stages of Kidney disease and that check up cost me another $169.
Her younger sister age 13 went for a dental last tues, no teeth pulled or any problems with teeth, her kidney values were too high for surgery/anesthesia so they put her on IV and her values were down the next day so the dental was done with the IV running continuously for 36 hrs. She has Clavamox (amoxicillin) to take until next thursday,but going back to the vet on tues, another $169. Lindseys bill was almost $1505. includes labs, 36 hr nursing care, IV's etc. She is in stage 2 of kidney disease, more advanced than her older sister so they both have a special diet thats made for Kidney health. Its from Rayne Nutrition in Kansas City, MO called a moderate protein Cod diet. They have been transitioning from the Merrick Thanksgiving Day dinner and have been eating the new food about 3 to 4 times a day, small amounts a little over 1/4 cup each feeding, as they are only 3 lbs and 3.6 lbs. I also have been giving them 2 drops of Kidney Support Gold from pet wellness in hopes the natural ingredients will help them also. I keep a journal when they eat, activity level, etc for the dr. in hopes that it will help their kidney health. They are so loved and glad we had the money, we would have worked our tails off to keep these babies with us as long as we can, they are very much loved, they are our kids , furry and with 4 feet each, we'll love them until the end and figure out the best for them. BTW, the mail order diet costs $55 for 12 trays (equal to 14.1 cans each) one try lasts 2 days, but we'll keep them healthy and comfortable as long as we can, we love them.

A cleaning, 2 extractions, antibiotics and nail clipping cost us $205 this week but that is including 10% off for a multiple pet household. $1500....OUCH! My vet is a country vet and does not have a fancy office. I suspect a lot of expensive vets get their fancy stuff paid for by the pet owners.

Boy, if Dr. Rocky and Dr. Murphy ever retire, I am in deep doggie doodoo.
