Dressing for Cold Weather My puppy's first winter is fast approaching. I live in Saskatchewan, so its bound to get quite cold, very soon. Today, for example, it is a high of 0 Celsius and a low of about -7 Celsius. I have read that you can check whether a Yorkie is cold by feeling his ears and I imagine you get a feel for what your dog can handle from experience. I am just wondering what others' thoughts are on taking a Yorkie out in cold weather, how do you ensure your dog doesn't get too cold?, etc. |
Jackson is 16lbs, so bigger, and doesn't really seem to get cold TOO easily. I do, however, layer him up in really cold temps. I JUST bought him a waterproof Hurrta fleece jacket, which is very nice quality. He's also got fleece pajamas that cover his back legs too, so sometimes I'll put on something like that and then put a coat over top. He usually only needs something if it's under 35-40 degrees F. Anything above that doesn't seem to affect him. Check out YT user alaskayorkie ... he's got the coolest Yorkies around who stay warm in the AK winters! |
I only bundle Joel up for long walks, I put like three different things on him lol but he really rather go naked. When he really gets cold he'll start lifting his feet and thats when I know he's too cold. I would also get him booties, other than that it just depends on the yorkie, if I don't make Joel come in he would freeze, haha:) |
I used to put a coat on my Littlest Mac when I first got him and went through the first winter. I ordered him a real good thermal coat which was... okay. But he really doesnt' care much about the temperature. They get used to it as they go outside three times everyday for a few minutes each time. I agree that the way you know your puppy is getting too cold is when they pick up one of their feet and don't want to put it down again. That's when it's time to head inside. Otherwise they love being outside and romping in the snow. I also have an unused raincoat... who cares about a drops of rain. Anyone want a well insulted thermal coat? :) |
Most yorkies live a pampered life of an indoor dog, with heating in winter & air conditioning in summer. Combine that with their single coat of hair and they aren't meant to be a hardy outdoor breed. So, when we go outside in fall/winter, if I need a hoodie, ZoE gets one too. If I need a winter coat, ZoE gets one too. |
Waffles gets chilled and shivers very easily. I have tshirts and a jacket for her for chilly outings. |
Most cover their pups. There is no undercoat so they tend to get cold |
I have sweaters, pajama, winter coats, boots, and even a scarf for my dog. I feel his ears...when he is cold, his ears are usually really cold. People I know laugh at me sometimes but I don't really care what others say anyways. So long my little guy is warm and comfy. They aren't expensive if you know where to buy them, discount stores and such. I buy mine from Winners as they have a pretty good selection. |
