Spay question?? Hi :wavey: Hope all is well with everyone. My baby girl is schedule to be spay next week-I'm so scared!! She is 6 months old and finally made it to 2.6 lbs . We went to the vet today for lab and paper work. I had to decide on some "optional" procedure ie post ECG/blood pressure/IV.....With that being said I need some advice on what was done when your baby was spay-if you can remember. I trust my vet-but I just want to make sure my baby will be ok. And that I won't be over spending on things not needed. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance |
I always go for all the extras....full panel of blood work, I want ekg monitoring throughout the procedure, I want ivs during as well as after the procedure....in fact, I insist they leave the IV in until I pick the baby up....I want the pup "tanked up" with glucose and iv fluid to tide her over until she feels like eating and drinking post op....usually 24 hours later. I like Tirbutrol in Vitamino for pain medication....it is a liquid, and it is easy to give...I will usually mix it with just a drop of Dr.Millers Pet Nutro Drops, ....you can use Karo too...it sweetens it up and they love it. I like a baby onesie to keep the baby from fooling with stitches.....I always have Pedialyte for hydration post op.....and I will give mine chicken baby food or RC Puppy Mousse as a special treat to be sure she eats something that doesnt take much effort....they love both those options and it is easily digested. Make sure they use a gas anesthesia.....if necessary my vet gives a smidge of propofol to get my babies intubated, and my babies are not given barbituates of any kind...neither are they given morphine. |

Thanks for your input. Did they suggest any dental work as well? |

Yes, most take care of any dental work while the baby is under for spaying....I just dont like the tiny little babies to be under for extended period of time...does she have a lot of retained baby teeth that need to come out? If the vet works fast, I feel better about that.... |
Sorry-new to the posting and having a yorkie. Lilly (my little ones name) has 4 teeth that need to be extracted. He is suggesting fluoride and some kind of plaque prevention gel that makes the fluoride last longer..... |
