Rice and Arsenic What's the deal with rice and arsenic? Since one of the main ingredients in dog food is rice, should we stop feeding our dogs the standard kibble we've been feeding them for years? A friend of mine is very concerned, yet her last dog lived a healthy 18 years on a major brand of kibble with rice in it. I haven't talked to my vet yet because she already talked to hers and he had no thoughts on it at all. This said, a Yorkie is a pretty small breed, so it would seem even a small amount of Arsenic would be harmful, yet many dogs drink from the toilet and eat dirt. Any thoughts? I love Ruger, but don't really have the funds for designer dog food. |
The better dog foods really aren't that expensive to feed. I feed my two large cats and I figured out that it costs me 50 cents/day to feed them. So that would be 25 cents/cat and I know for a fact my two yorkies eat a lot less than that. Good food also helps keep your dog healthy which means fewer trips to the vet. Good food really is worth the investment. |
Ruger gets Nutro. I talked to a vet this afternoon, and she said not to feed a dog any food made in China. I didn't realize some dog food was made in China and she assured me a lot of it is. Fortunately Nutro is made in the states. |
Thankfully yorkies don't eat much so it pretty cheap to feed them compared to a Golden Retriever. |
I would go without a couple things so I could afford to feed a better dog food. I would never feed Nutro, check consumer reports- it has made a lot of dogs sick! |
Arsenic is a naturally occurring substance in many food items. You would be hard-pressed to find a dog food that doesn't contain any of the items. As someone mentioned above, our dogs are in the dirt and often chew on a little stick....all things where you are going to find naturally occurring arsenic. It's even in our drinking water. |

Most of us down here in the South have eaten rice all our lives....many of us, at least once a day!!! Have not gotten arsenic poisoning as of yet, and that is going on 64 years!!! Unless someone starts adding rat poison to your diet, or your dogs diet, I wouldnt worry about the levels of naturally occuring arsenic in rice! Actually, we are probably exposed to more arsenic than you would imagine...remember a while back there was a big hoopla over arsenic being used in "treated lumber" .....that was being used in everything from landscape timbers, to the studs in every house that was being built, and HAD been, for YEARS!!!!! |
There are many foods made in the United States, but use ingredients from China. I would be very surprised if Nutro didn't use ingredients from China. I am not a Nutro fan and would never feed it. It is hard to find foods that don't use ingredients from China these days. Companies are usually very evasive about where their ingredients come from. The arsenic in rice is becoming a concern. I feed grain free foods currently and I am not sure I would want to feed a food with rice in it. I believe, but don't know for certain, that they would allow pet food to use rice that has higher levels of arsenic than allowed in people food. So many ingredients that don't pass inspection and testing for human food ends up in pet food and animal feed. It is scary because these 'animals' are either our pets or end up being food WE eat. |
