Honest Kitchen Anyone feed this food as main staple? I Have some I use for a topper. But I was just wondering is anyone feeds this as there primary food?? I mean it looks better than kibble at least it looks like dried food. I'm using homemade but am thinking this would be a good food for camping and for an emergancy kit because it's dehydrated. Just trying to get info thanks |
I have not used it, but I know many people who do feed HK as the primary diet and are very happy with it. HK has helped dogs who suffer severe allergies. To the best of my knowledge, HK has never had a recall. They also state on their website that none of their ingredients come from China, as rumored on the internet. HK does contain small amounts of garlic, as do many dog foods. People who prefer not to feed garlic often choose Grandma Lucy's over HK. |
I only feed THK for breakfast. The reason why I chose this food is bc of the high fiber content. Princess had colitis a couple months back, so this food is great for her. Mimi is very picky, but she licks her bowl clean. They all love it, all the different flavors, perfect for rotating proteins. I only give it to them for 1 meal bc I think the fiber content is on the high side. THK doesn't use garlic on all their formulas, only Keen has it. |
I use it as a topper. Mine eat FROMM's Chicken a la Veg as their kibble which they will also happily eat without the topper. |
I think the Honest Kitchen is a great food and I feed it. That is really interesting to hear that it worked for you too, Mimimomo. Snickers has had chronic colitis since we got him and since we started feeding HK, it's the longest we've gone without any episodes and having to go to the vet. I appreciate that it is being made with human grade ingredients and in a human food factory. I was pretty sure I wanted to feed homemade, but I also worried about not having food avaliable if there was ever an emergency...not to mention it is more convenient for travel. I think it would be more difficult to feed this food with a large dog, because it is so expensive, but luckily, it's not so bad with a small dog |
Honest Kitchen is the only "Food Grade" dog food that I know of??? Guess I'll put some in my BOB bag. Thanks |
I just started trying this with My dogs. Tucker has a really sensitive stomach, and I had him on a vet. prescribed diet, but he got so smelly. :/ his breath, ears and body that I couldnt even stand to have him sit by me. :( So After more research, and hearing/ reading good reviews about THK, I decided to give it a try. Im using Verve, and so far so good. No upset tummies, eating grass, throwing up, reverse sneezing etc. He's only been on it a week and the smelliness is already gone, he has great energy and overall seems happy! The only downfall is that he seems to be pooping more and its been pretty big piles..:/..lol.. |
^^ Worth having extra poop...= clean smelling happy dog :) |

I've been using a sample packet of the Zeal as a topper for Toki's kibble and she goes nuts over it! I've considered doing one meal with THK and one kibble meal but I'm not sure how much more this will cost. |

I fed Honest Kitchen for quite a while. However i have since switched since it was becoming too expensive for 4 dogs. I was happy with it and so were the dogs. But They ended up having to eat more than i expected to maintain the body weights. And they pooped ALOT!!! lol, i couldnt beleive how much more. But i was happy with it and so were the dogs:) |

I am now feeding my Maltese and Yorkie Honest Kitchen Keen. They absolutely lick their dishes squeaky clean. I add some mashed carrots and green beans to it and a small amount of chicken and they love it. However, it can be fed as a complete meal without the additions. For a few months I fed them the Honest Kitchen Zeal and although they liked it, they wasted a lot because there were large pieces of fish in it that did not hydrate very well. The Zeal gave them fish breath, but I am not noticing any bad breath from the Keen. |
My Minnie is a 7 months old 4 pds Yorkie and a VERY picky eater! When I feed her 1/4 cup of honest kitchen embark, she would only eat 1/3 of the bowl, and I know she is not crazy about the food. I do like honest kitchen because it is healthy. So far, Minnie's favorite is mixed her Acana kibbles with canned food. She loves Merrick, Blue, and Wellness for canned food. I also want to try Dr. Harvey's premixed products. |
