Dental Cleaning? My vet recommends a yearly dental for my yorkies. I was concerned about anesthesia, but she said the benefits of the cleaning far outweigh the risks from anesthesia. Any advice? Anyone else give their dogs a dental cleaning annually? Also, one of my yorkies chipped her front tooth somehow. Will that be an issue for her at all? Jill |
A chipped tooth is more susceptible to going bad with plaque and tartar, but depending on how much of it is chipped, it isn't always cause to remove it. Some people are in favor of annual cleanings, others are not. I personally am not. Although a visual exam can't determine potential underlying problems that only an x-ray can reveal, I still think the decision has to be weighed for each dog individually. |
I would not do it yearly just because she thinks it should be yearly I would only do it as needed. Dentals and brushing there teeth are very important. Getting blood work before is the best thing to do to make sure anesthesia is going to be ok for them. |
Peanut's tarter builds up pretty quickly. He gets dental cleanings about once every 2 years- He always has the pre- blood work before going under. It does depend on how quickly tarter builds up on your yorkies teeth, however I don't know about "yearly" Seems a little much to me. If I think there is a lot of build up, I will run Peanut into the Vet and the Vet will look at his teeth and let me know if we should or shouldn't do a dental. |
So far Couver has had one dental cleaning and he is 4. Khloe will be going in for her first cleaning at the end of the month and she is 2.5 years old. I think every year might be excessive... but just keep an eye on your pup's teeth. |
I think the teeth should be checked during the annual check up. if the vet feels a cleaning is needed than ok. |
I guess it would depend upon what other measures you take, such as brushing, giving chew sticks that reduce tartar, and using dental sprays. Your food choice can also make a difference in how much tartar you dog has, also genetic plays a row. |
Yes do it when your vet says it is necessary. My dog was 12 before he needed a cleaning but some need it more often, my girl needs it yearly. |
Some yorkies may need it yearly, some may not. What were the vets reasonings for a yearly dental -- are their teeth full of plaque and tarter build-up? If not, yearly cleanings seem excessive, though some will need it that often. I think you should do as needed. |
my vet said we will give morgan a teeth cleaning when he needs it// I will do the pre anesthetic blood work |
Small dogs are very susceptible to teeth trouble. The first time I took mikki in for stinkey breath she ended up having 13 theeth pulled and now has a couple more pulled year. |
I brush Prissy and Jasmines teeth every day. At the vet this week he checked Jasmine's teeth ((Prissy didn't have an appt) and said she was due for a dental, she is 4 years old. After checking he told me her teeth looked great, keep up the good work and he would check her teeth again next year. I was relieved to say the least. |
