when do I start brushing teeth I need to start tomorrow.. when do you generally start? |
My baby has a small greyish spot on his right side 4 bottom teeth where the gums are I am going to the vet. I am sure it is decay because I did not take care of him. |
When they start eating food and not just mom's milk. However mine are all on a BARF diet so we use a spray and do not brush. However coconut oil is much safer on dogs and especially pups than many of the tooth pastes (yes even the one most vets carry). |
I would start asap. It's good to get them used to you brushing when they are young. |
Even though puppies will lose their milk teeth, you should start brushing early to get them use to the toothbrush. Use toothpaste made for dogs, human toothpaste has artificial sweeteners that can be deadly to dog. The enzymatic toothpastes are costly, but they have been shown to be effective in reducing tartar. CET and Petrodex are two good brands and most dogs love the poultry flavor. Early tooth brushing sessions should be short with lots of praise! |

Much better discovery than decay. |
Start as soon as they get all their adult teeth? Not sure if you start too early especially during the teeth changing period, it will be painful for them? |

Start early so they get use to you putting things in there mouth. I started ~ 12 weeks just a few seconds a day. With the finger brush. Now at 26 weeks I can use a toothbrush take my time and brush every tooth. Moki lets me inspect his mouth, wiggle his teeth but only for about a minute -2 mins then he protest. Worth the trouble in the beginning. Then you will have years of being able to maintain your dogs teeth without pulling them out from decay. IMO nothing is better than simple brushing. Helps the gums also. |
