Fingers crossed new Kibble for Buster
 

I am trying a new kibble for Buster. He prefers red meat beef, bison, and venison over turkey and chicken. I have been trying to help him loose weight while still feeding a premium food. I have recently been feeding him the Ziwipeak Air Dried Raw Venison Formula. But with a crude protein of 36% and fat of 32% the amount I was feeding was so small he was not filled up. I had fed Orijen Regional Red before with 38% protein and 18% fat and I add a little Honest Kitchen Verve for wet protein 22.5% and fat 8.5%. I have been so confused over how much might be too much protein and fat for a Yorkie. He has arthritis and LP so he is not that active, mostly walks and playdates.
I am trying the new Artemis Osopure Grain Free Bison and Garbanzo Bean. It has protein 24% and fat 14%. The most important fact is that he actually likes the kibble. It is smaller than the Orijen kibble so it is easier to eat as well. He is able to eat a larger amount so he seems more satisfied and does not whine for treats as much. Hopefully this will work and we can loose another pound. He was 9.2 and now we are at 8 with hopes to make it down to 7 fingers crossed.

Do you take Buster for walks? My Spud tends to pack on the pounds so I take him out twice a day for walks. Of course he terrier-rizes other dogs and thinks he owns the neighborhood. It is good for him to get excercise and hopefully will slim down a bit!

I do take him for walks but they are more of a sniff and a pee. We don't really get going and keep going at a steady pace. We used to go for long walks when he was a puppy but then he started to hide when we said walkies. :( I found out he had LP in his rear legs, his left was operated on 2 years ago and arthritis in his front legs. It is so sad to see his ears go down when we say walkies. As the weight comes off he is getting better about walks. How long to you go out for on your walks?
LOL Buster is Mr meet and greet. I call him a terror-ier when he is on guard duty.

I have not seen the Osopure Grain-free Bison! Toki is on the Pure Vita Grain-free Bison but the fiber is kind of high (almost 3x as much as other foods that she's been on!). We've just fully transitioned but her poos have already become pretty hard which kind of concerns me. I can't find the formula on the Artemis website but does the Osopure have a lower fiber content? We might have to check that out!

It is a new formula, they don't even have it up on their website yet. The company is based out of Los Angeles and my local store has been carrying them for years. I saw it there this weekend when I went looking for new kibble.

You guys have the inside scoop! Thanks for the info! We are trying to trim down Toki (she actually is at 9 pounds and could maybe go down to 8.5 or perhaps even a smidge less) and I wanted to feed her regular grain-free dog foods but a lot of them are higher calorie and she gets such a small amount of kibble that I know she's not completely satisfied. This formula has a much lower calorie count than the Pure Vita (420ish cal/cup). How much does Buster get to eat daily? I've been giving Toki some pumpkin and mostly frozen green beans to help compensate for the volume of food but I think she'd like having more kibbles to crunch on.

Hi! When I take Spud and JoJo out we don't go really far. We have to dodge other dogs because these Yorkies want to own the street and will bark and get mean at the other dogs walking. Just to get them out in the fresh air. I usually have to carry JoJo until we head home, then he wants to walk. He chases toys alot around the house where Spud just sits. I give Spud the food with the chondroitin and glucosamine in it. He can have the leg problems to. Seems to be well right now.

I had the same problem with Buster on the Ziwipeak. It is great food but the amount was so small he was always hungry. I would bulk it up with green beans, sweet potatoes, lettuce, carrots, etc but he was always hungry. With the Osopure they recommend 2/3 - 1 cup for 5-10 pounds. I am feeding him 1/4 cup in the morning and night and set aside another 1/4 for treats and training. Since we are trying to loose weight I weigh him every week so how much I feed will be a learning curve. Buster is much more satisfied after his meal so I am hopeful this will work out.
LOL I have never done as much research into my own diet as I do with Buster. I just read an article in Fetch magazine and found out that Quinoa is a great grain for dogs. It said that it is loaded with protein and contains all 10 of a dog's essential amino acids which is very rare for a grain so I started adding some to Buster's diet.

Hi Buster is the same way I have to pick him up and walk a block or two away to jump start him on his walks. The new scents start his peemail thread.
Everyday is truly wonderful with Yorkies!!!
