Joint supplements? Mom took Tallulah to the vet at my request. Dr. Polly (who is probably the best vet I've ever known) looked her over and found she's got some joint problems. We've known about Tallulah's LP for a while, but it doesn't seem to bother her or hold her back much. Dr. P did find a click in one of her front wrist areas though. She's been given pain meds for the next few days, but I was wondering if the experts at YT knew of any good joint supplements we could look into to give her. I'm going to look up some doggy Orthos in the area too, but I think the joint supplements might be a good place to start. Any recommendations? |
Dasuquin is what Columbo takes. It's like Cosoquin, but better. Contains glucosamine, but also has ASU, chondroitin, MSM and a few other things. It lubes up the joints and the MSM also has pain relieving qualities. I buy the chewable tablets for small dogs. The tablets are larger, so I use a pill cutter to cut them in half, which is still a little more than the recommended dosage for his size. One bottle of 150 tablets cut in half lasts 10 months. He loves it and thinks it's a treat. He was suffering from a stiff neck and the doctor put him on rimadyl, which is not safe to be on long term. He has now taken it for 5 years and never takes rimadyl. Dasuquin is a miracle worker. It takes a month or two to kick in |
We use Dasuquin for Toki since she has Legg-perthes and also mild LP in one of her knees. Cosequin is also very popular and I have only read good things about it. Both supplements are made by the same company. |
I have used Cosequin for YEARS and I can tell you, in MY cases, this stuff is a miracle drug!!! I was THRILLED to read ON THIS FORUM!!! about the Dasuquin, and have recommended it to my brother for his 16 year old collie that is having hip issues...she has been on Cosequin for about 5 years, but it looks like her arthritis is getting worse in her hip....I am really hopeful this Dasuquin can help her for a while longer....I am thinking when you improve on "perfection", OMG!!! how can you do any better??!!!! I have ordered some for my group....am REALLY excited about seeing how much BETTER it can make my little Crickette! I am anxious to see if it helps my brothers collie, Missy. |
I've checked the Dasuquin out on Amazon. Will probably get some for her when I get my paycheck next week. Do any of you know what I could tailor the dose to for a 3lb yorkie? I'm thinking probably a fourth of a tablet, but I don't know how big they are. |
Callie's orthopedic surgeon recommended Dasuquin and that is what she is on. |

There are two kinds of Dasuquin: with MSM and without MSM. The labels look almost the same and are easy to confuse, one just says "with MSM". So be sure to look for that when you order so you get what you want. I buy the one with MSM. |

Several years ago when I had a nearly 100 pound golden retriever, the vet told me to give him glucosamine and said it didn't matter if it was people glucosamine, since the veterinary version usually cost much more. Back then she said to give him 1000mg per day. One small dog Dasuquin tab contains 600 mg. I cut it in half, so Columbo takes 300mg per day. He only weighs 8.5, so I guess he really could take a quarter tab. He's been on the half tab for so long, I'll probably stick with that because he's recently had knee surgery and I don't want to take the chance now of cutting back the benefits as he starts to age. |

I think it contributes to why Columbo doesn't need rimadyl anymore. Rimadyl can cause organ failure in long term use. So short term or in pretty old dogs, it's ok. But you never want it as a maintenance for a younger dog. I had to learn that myself. The vet I had then didn't tell me that. Needless to say, he's not my vet anymore. |
Cosequin has been studied, so it's often the only one that vets will recommend (not always, but most often). That's what we use; I get it the RS version on Amazon. |
