comfortis debacle
 
Hi Everyone,

I have such a difficult time giving our Yorkie his Comfortis. He can always find it in any treat, cheese, hot dog, hamburger doesn't matter, he always finds it. Then just trying to poke it down, forget it. His little mouth is so small. I just feel so defeated by this, I dread when it comes due each month. I would welcome any and all suggestions. Help! please!

Welcome to YT you are not alone in your struggle so don't feel defeated. It's the hardest task giving Georgie any pill. He had major surgery and refused to take his pain meds. They have pill pockets you can buy to put it in there. I am sure other people have suggestions as well.

If food doesn't work you can always ask the dr for a Pill popper or pill syringe. It is quick and easy. I use it for my cats if I need to give them a pill.

A tiny tad of cream cheese or liverwurst usually does the trick at my house, but I've had a few that where really hard - For those dogs, either a pill gun, or have your vet teach you how to pill them by hand.

I had to change Tibbe from Interceptor to Heartguard this year and am glad I did so far as he just eats the medication. It's so big I have to break it into 2 or 3 pieces but Tibbe loves it and gobbles it down easily. Can you change to a heartworm preventative like Heartguard if nothing else works?

That's a good thought as well - And if all else fails, use a product like Advantage Multi, it does about the same thing as Comfortis, but it's topical, but still prevents fleas, ticks, heartworm, etc.

Comfortis isn't a Heart Worm pill. It's a pill for fleas.

I have tried the Topicals on mine and it's a no go, they seem to have reactions to it.

Mine get their Comfortis in Cream Cheese. I only have two that take it. My smallest one that is 3 pounds doesn't get it, since it is only to be used on 5 pounds and above.

Now I on her Heart Worm Preventive (Sentinel) my smallest one I have to stick it in the back of her mouth and hold her mouth shut and rub her throat until she swallows.

I've had the same problem :(

What about going the holistic route? I have one with severe allergies that can't tolerate anything chemical, thankfully where I leave fleas/ticks aren't really much of a problem, but if I travel with her which I do frequently, I have to do something - I use a holistic product that contains neem and cedar oils, and it works well to keep her flea-free.
