Papillomas?
 

Hey everyone! So little Rox has these little bumps on her... maybe 4 total. She's got one on her side (about the size of a pea), one on her leg (way smaller), and now one on her head. She's had the one on her side for maybe 2 years now, probably longer. She has seen a vet a couple times in this period and none of them seem worried about it, saying they are "papillomas" and will probably go away on their own. They don't seem to be going away, although I wouldn't say they're getting worse either (except for the one on her head that I noticed earlier this week). They don't seem to be filled with puss, they don't bleed, and they're not flaky or gross looking. Just a raised area of skin. However, everytime I google them I totally freak out about the results. They say they're super contagious and I shouldn't have her near other dogs... but the pictures show these crazy warts in dogs' mouths (she doesn't have any of those). My vets haven't said anything about keeping her contained, but I don't want to be an irresponsible pet owner. I read on one site that I can help them go away by improving her immune system. It recommended omega-3s and something else. I have her on Nutro Ultra food which is supposed to be packed with omega-3s, but I wonder if I should add some vitamins to help. I don't know if anyone knows anything about canine papillomavirus (which is doesn't seem like she has? can the papilloma growths be something different? is that a dumb question?)

The bumps don't seem to be affecting Roxie's health at all, but I wouldn't mind some opinions and stuff.

Just gave her a thorough petting and it seems the one she had forever on her side has gone away... or she needs a hair cut. It looks like she has the bump on her head

I had no idea that's what it was called. Momo has those tiny little white bumps almost like warts. My vet said it's completely normal & I don't need to worry about it, but it might spread. That scared me, so I had it removed. They used the freezing method, but it came back. It's on his lower back, but have recently noticed a tiny bump on his nose. Read that it's not contagious for us humans but it is amongst the canines.

Just wanted to add that I know his immune system is out of wack from over vaccinating.=/

This is the one that was most helpful. I think Roxie just the hystiocytoma or whatever it was called. I did just do a search for papilloma on the other thread. I may look more at this h business ^

Thanks for the link! Momo's is exactly like what ladyjane said on post #4 "The papilloma virus produces warts that look like cauliflower." It's tiny, but has 2 little white bumps...I hope it doesn't spread & get big. My vet knew right away what it was when he saw it & it sure put my mind @ ease. Did you take her to the vet just in case? I hope it's nothing serious & Roxie will be ok.

Hmmm now I am confused, here it says papillomavirus it's flat & black in color. Wart Virus in Dogs | petMD Momo's is white, bumpy & hard like a pimple. Anyway, I don't know what the medical term is for what he has, but my vet said it's not a tumor or anything.

Roxie has seen the vet a couple of times and they don't seem concerned at all. (I say they because we've moved a few times and she's seen multiple ones.) I just wanted to know if she's safe to be around other dogs and such (she lovvves to socialize). Also if there was any way to treat it, which it doesn't seem like.

Also, she doesn't have any in/near her mouth or her eyes

What color are Roxie's bumps? Trying to compare it to Momo's & see if it's the same...loll. I have 3 other yorkies & they don't seem to be affected by it (knock on wood!). Unless it's in direct contact, I don't think you need to worry about it. I try not to touch it just in case I forget to wash my hands & touch the other fur butts & spread it that way. I'm more worried that it's going to spread all over Momo!=/

It's just skin colored. It's not any different than the rest of her except it's raised. I think she's just got the one right now. She's also got flat, black marks on her stomach which I am now convinced are melanoma or something. One vet said sun spots, another said some kind of infection and gave me medicated shampoo (no change, of course I have to keep it on her for 15 minutes before rinsing... he's obviously never bathed a yorkie). Like I said before, she doesn't act sick or anything. But she's my first dog so I *try* not to run to the vet (with an open wallet) everytime something doesn't look quite right (I've had her for 6 years).

Ok, it is exactly like Momo's. I said white, but it is skin colored, his skin is very light. As for the black marks on her stomach, it sounds like part of the description of the papillomavirus on the link to petmd. The vet that said it was some kind of infection, did he do a cytology/skin scrape to determine that cause? Then you don't need to worry... Loll next time you need to wait 15mins, just wrap her in a warm just out of the dryer towel;) It's way past my bedtime, chat w/ya ltr!

My Roxie also has papilloma bumps. Some do get black when they have not been scratched or soaked in a good bath. At this time she has about 20 bumps that are various sizes but none bigger than .5cm. I bath her with anti itch shampoo when she seems to be irritated by them. Other than that she is not affected by them. She got her first at around 9 yrs old. Her daughter Dora has one. Dora, Roxie's pup has been with us since birth and she just got her first bump at 9 yrs of age. I tried Thuja oil but it did not work at all for Roxie. I believe it is successful with puppies who get it in mucus membrane areas. Both vets I go to have said to just leave them alone as they don't bother her. That is my feeling too. The form they get when older is not contagious. Hope this helps.
