Polycythemia My little buddy was diagnosed with polycythemia, which is a rare bone marrow disease. He produces too many red blood cells. My vet tried a chemo drug, but it had negative effects on his white blood cells. So now his treatment is a phlebotomy every so often depending on how fast his red blood cells are regenerating. It doesn't seem to effect him unless his red blood cells get too high, otherwise he's a normal pup. I know this is a rare condition, but I was wondering if anyone else dealt with this or any red blood cell issues? |
I have no input on your little guys disease, but want to bump up your thread in case someone can give you advice. I also want to offer prayers for your baby that treatments will get his condition under control. Poor little guy:( |
There are 3 different kinds of Polycythemia, do you know which kind he has?? My late Molly who had a whole slew of medical conditions towards the end of life was Dx'd with this as well. We had to remove some of the blood at times and keep checking her blood levels. We only had to do this 3 times and then it seemed to be normal out. Not sure if the kidney issues were what was causing it or not. Molly had Cushings, Early Renal Disease, Chronic Pancreatitis, IBD and in the End Cancer took her. |
I did want to sate that my Molly was treated by a Specialist that was well versed in hematology, immune mediated disease, as well as critical internal medicine cases. I do hope your baby will be ok. They can live a very a normal life, just make sure his blood is tested often. |
