Question on feeding venison
 
I have had many Yorkshire Terriers but now only have three which are rescues. My husband is a hunter and we always have venison. Is there anyone out there that could give advice about introducing this into their diet. Cooked or raw. :)

Mine have had venison dog food and loved it. I rotate so they don't just get used to one single food.

When you introduce the new meat, do it slowly and little by little to avoid a tummy upset. Add a little of the meat to another meal and gradually increase the amount until they can handle an entire meal of venison. Venison is quite rich and wild-tasting, so it might take them a little while to get used to the taste. If they turn their noses up at it, offer it frozen or slightly thawed at the next meal.

I feed raw venison to my dogs and they love it. You are so lucky to have this free and healthy food for them! I'm waiting for hunting season to start in Virginia so I can re-stock my freezer!!

When I introduced venison for the first time I took a fish oil capsule and punctured it, pouring it on the meat so that my older dog (who took fish oil a few times a week) would be attracted to it. I didn't have to worry- she gobbled it down.

Sometimes I feed it partially frozen to help clean the back teeth.

Hope your dogs love it!

If venison is prepared right, it doesn't taste wild or gamey.


We feed our dogs venison on occasion, as that's literally the only meat we keep in the freezer. We process it ourselves, and I feel more comfortable feeding them venison than I do any other meats or foods, because I know there's nothing been added to it (preservatives, growth hormones, etc). We have duck and wild hog on occasion too.

I don't prepare meat for my dogs like I would for myself and the "wild & rich" comment had more to do with the texture than the preparation. I feed raw meat only and as a general rule of thumb, adult dogs need to be transitioned onto new raw meats if you want to avoid a tummy upset, more frequently known as cannon butt. Puppies and younger dogs can handle new types of meat more easily and quickly. Wild meats like venison, duck, hog, etc. are great and if you're feeding raw, it's a good idea to freeze it solid for about two weeks to kill any unwanted parasites. I wish I could get venison!

I have fed mine venison on occasion - raw - when I can get it. I've even thought about taking up hunting so that I could keep them eating it but I'm just not sure I could do it.... I think it's wonderful for them! Just don't feed the weight bearing bones to them....
